For digital files, I use a little Fiio X3 plugged in to my DAC (Audiolab Q-Dac). Otherwise I plug my phone in to it Samsung. Sound good and nice an cheap.

I can recommend the Thorens TD550. Bought mine B stock about 5 years ago under £5k with an Ortofon 12" arm. Sounds much better than my old LP12 and very pretty with the macassar finish.

The Sony's seem to garner the most praise followed by the Sennheisers at around the £200 mark. Both work with iphones. I use LG SN4's because they came free with my TV. Perfectly happy with them.
