Is this the last Mr Tibbs split earth mod question?

One +ve from the Hicap supplies the output gain boards, the other supplies everything else (the input buffers, phono boards and tape boards). You don’t mention the input buffers though, so have they been removed? If so, then only one supply is in use, but I’m not sure which one lights the LED...

    MQA sucks

There are several issues here. I found MQA an abomination, which is why I use Qobuz. But even without MQA, Qobuz still has only the latest remixes of rock / pop music, so it’s hit and miss how well they compare with the original mixes. But also your KEF LS60 Wireless use Bluetooth. Can they be...

Naim Nac 42.5 Naim NAC 42.5 servicing?

I have them in my NAC72, so I must have done something wrong. Laverda's principle is the same, regardless of what the pre-amp is, so you're being finnicky.

The PSU de-couplers follow a 27R resistor, so their ESR will be swamped by that. I don’t see the point of using NOS feedback capacitors (of uncertain providence), as they’re are in series with a 1k resistor.

I don’t recommend you change the ROE capacitors as you will change the sound. As they’re sealed, there’s little opportunity for their electrolyte to leak, unless you crack the bottom seal during removal. They’re a definitive part of the Naim sound in my opinion. I agree with the gyrator mod BTW.

    Making vinyl louder

I use a voltage divider for digital input. This brings it on-par with my 3.5mV MM cartridge. Phono stage gain is 41dB.

Sound quality advantages of MM cartridges

I'd assume that would be a capacitance issue with your MM phono stage? I don't see any 10kHz ringing with mine.

Sound quality advantages of MM cartridges

@davidsrsb I assume by “ringing like a bell” you mean at around 10Hz (the resonance frequency of the arm / cartridge)? That’s certainly by far the strongest signal that comes from mine, the reason why RIAA gain has to fall off below about 20Hz or so. There are two issues here. The arm /...

Sound quality advantages of MM cartridges

Could someone please clarify something for me? We seem now to be talking about low stylus tip mass and low cantilever mass as being “better”. These will affect the compliance of the cartridge, and thus the resonance frequency of the tonearm and cartridge. So, a very high compliance cartridge...

    Nottingham Analogue Mentor Vs Hyperspace

Yes, the NAS dealer manual recommends adding two capfuls of oil to a dry Hyperspace bearing, then mopping up any overflow. IIRC, there is a well above the bearing shaft too. If you put too much oil in, it will creep up to the record spindle over time. That would only damage any records it might...

    Nottingham Analogue Mentor Vs Hyperspace

My 2006 Hyperspace bearing is as follows. No grooves obviously. There's plenty of misinformation available about which uses what.

Sound quality advantages of MM cartridges

That’s interesting Jim, but it implies that “optical” (noncontact) cartridges are in a higher class than mechanical ones. I happen to believe it’s the interaction among groove, stylus, cartridge, arm and turntable that gives gramophones their special magic. We also have the cutting lathe doing a...

But we're not moving the large and powerful magnet generating the field. We're moving a tiny one. Let's not pursue this circular argument please!

Sound quality advantages of MM cartridges

Thanks. What I don’t understand though is, does this magnetic field take less force to waggle than moving a magnet would? Presumably it must do, since with a magnet, you have to move both its mass and its magnetic force.

Could you expand on that a bit please?
