    Stirling Broadcast LS3/5a V3 Review.

Well, I looked for a decent sounding, more recent recording of piano in my collection, and found Todd Gustavsen's "IGN" from 2003 on the ECM label. It has a lot of lively playing and a wide range of pitches, and seems to retain a lot of musical information in the recording. There's no doubt...

    Stirling Broadcast LS3/5a V3 Review.

Hmm...I'll take a listen this afternoon. The Kans are presently pulled out to ls3/5a position, so perfect.

    Audiophile songs you're sick of

Concur. I've found difficult recordings to be more reliable as a system test than good recordings. I've made good speaker choices in the past this way. In shows, I haven't seen a willingness to demonstrate how well they cope with the rough stuff.

    Audiophile songs you're sick of

I would bring my copy of Bernstein's Mahler 8th Symphony. I would want to hear how speakers attempt to resolve the crescendos of poorly recorded massed choir and orchestra! (I'm sure I would get booted from the room).

    Stirling Broadcast LS3/5a V3 Review.

It's an oft-quoted 'fact'. I have always experienced Kans, whether I or IIs to be in the same realm as the ls3/5a. It's reasonable: Same size box, drivers more similar than different. As far as my experience goes, the major differences are in the crossover designs which necessitate a different...

I've had both too, and I thought the V3s took it up a significant notch towards Kan II attributes: Speed and upper mid clarity resulting in a thrust to the music. Any party to my listening session this afternoon would have had a challenging time to tell the Kans from the V3s.

If one defines 'better' in technical terms, then yes. Clearly the V3s are the better transducer. In terms of musical enjoyment though, they are on a par with each other. I sometimes feel that if forced to flee my house, I would have a Kan under each arm rather than any other speaker!

    Quad ll original and Classic

Besides the lovely pairing you describe with the QIIs, I find no problem using it with a Quad 405-2....., -14dB attenuators in place at the amp inputs.

Vintage Bulgin mains connectors & safety

With my Bulgin connectors (Quad II), I wrapped the body and two inches of cable with stretch silicon black tape, which provides strain relief and make them impervious to being fiddled with.

    Subwoofers and LS3/5As

I added an SVS sub to my V3s a year ago and regarded it as an experiment, since I thought had adequate bass with the speakers closer to the back wall. My history with V2 bass extenders and another company's sub wasn't successful. I was surprised to find the SVS became a major enhancement to my...

    Quad ll original and Classic

I have a restored pair of original Quad IIs, with modern connectivity. I had the same thought as you, to buy a modern pair to replace them, but the old amps are utterly reliable, with no self-noise or speaker hum. I've only replaced a rectifier tube. This is so unlike other, modern tube amps...

    Drawing the Line

During the past five years I occasionally forayed into modern, 'twice as expensive' components, but found that my listening pleasure (the bottom line) was not improved. Once the thrill of the new passed, I gravitated back to the synergistic array of pieces that I already had. Certainly 'good...

    Early Stirling Broadcast LS3/5As

The V3s are remarkable. They manage to sound both very energetic, portraying well the momentum in music, as well as being refined at the same time. I sometimes feel that I want to scale up the music performance with larger drivers, but then I forget and just listen to music.

    A vintage Quad thread.

It of course depends on the speakers, but I chose the 405-2 over the 303 for my collection of small monitors....and I like the 303.
