So far, so good..... I tried the calibration yesterday (before I cleaned it) and it made no difference. I cleaned the lens today - and the contacts on the ribbon cable for good measure - and re-ran the calibration. It then read the TOC. I ejected and reinserted the same CD a dozen times...

This is good to know. Like most service sequences, its not the sort of thing you can discover by accident!

Any idea how best to access the laser on these? I did take the top cover off but the laser transport seemed to be enclosed - although I have to admit that I didn't look too closely. But assuming that there is a way of getting to the lens, I would be very interested in knowing how to initiate...

Thanks for the suggestion. I just spotted this earlier today when I was looking for options. If cleaning the lens doesn't help, I think this is what I would go for.

After referring to it in the title and text several times as a UD-M30, I realised that it is actually a UD-M31!!!! My excuse is that it is paired with a DMD-M30 MiniDisk player and I got confused. :D I haven't tried a CD cleaner yet (I don't have one) but wouldn't dirt on the lens cause...

Hi everyone. I'm afraid I only post here when I have a problem and today is no exception! I have a Denon UD-M30 CD/receiver as a second system in the bedroom, with the matching SCM51 Denon/Mission speakers in the bedroom and a pair of Eltax Mirage 2i speakers run into the adjacent kitchen...

So another vote for the Rega Apollo. If it is going to be too expensive (or too troublesome) to get the AA5+ repaired, the Apollo looks to be the most likely choice.

I don't mind having to open the tray manually but, if I decide to get a new player, I might replace the tray gear anyway just so it is a bit more usable for the next owner. (Even if I have to give it away, I don't want it going to the dump!) It has never been cleaned. Before now, it hasn't...

In a word - price! I have set a (fairly arbitary) figure of £500 as my budget. When I went in to Infidelity all those years ago, it was just to replace my blown speakers. Came out with a completely new - an hugely better - system. I have never regretted it for a moment but I want to avoid...

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like this has been discontinued which means it might be discounted down to the sort of price I am considering (<=£500).

I've just found the current upgrade price (http://avondaleaudio.com/arcam-cd-upgrade/) and it is now £450. The hassle and the price is putting me of this option. Maybe I can find someone more locally that can do the basic repairs needed.

Ah, Chesterfield is a 3 hour drive from where I live. Once you add petrol costs to the price of the mods, it would be a lot closer to the price of a new Rega Apollo. Given my normal level of inertia and laziness, I will probably end up getting a Rega Apollo locally!
