A user's guide to John Zorn

Thanks for this. I've been away from pfm for a while and this brilliant post really reminded me of what I've been missing. Great stuff.

    Fair price for Linn Axis?

Thanks, that's really useful. I remember paying £250 for it, second hand, in about 1990. £250 was a huge amount of money to me at that time.

    Fair price for Linn Axis?

Hi, looking for some advice please. I have an Axis TT which someone has expressed an interest in. It is the later edition with switchable speed and Akito arm. The TT and arm are in good condition save for hinges and hinge holders which are shot - a known weak point on this deck. Views on...

    what next format to revive?

I'm not sure about "massive retrieval problems forming in the years ahead". Wav files have been around for quite a while and so have countless types of media files which can easily be read by a wide range of software applications.

    'Trying too hard'

London Calling is a great record, even if they were trying too hard. To accuse Tom Waits of the same thing is misunderstanding what he's about, IMO.

What concert have you last been to #3

Matthew E White at Camden Roundhouse. We mainly went becuase mrs had tickets for Natalie Prass gig which got cancelled so we decided to see her with Matthew instead. As it turned out, the gig exceeded my expectations by a mile - it was really superb. The band he plays with are top notch and...

    Cheap laptop recommendation

We have 3 thinkpad T4x in the house. Two were bought second hand very cheap. One shipped with a spinning disc which I replaced with a SSD. All work faultlessly and are silent.

    Employment Law/Rights etc.

I would like to see in writing where a union has agreed to 8.5 hours between shifts - this contravenes so many recognised good practices that I really struggle to believe that any union would accept this. I would ask the union rep and the manager to produce the writen agreement which allows...

    Employment Law/Rights etc.

The union is only as effective as its membership. If your wife is a lone voice among people who are prepared to be sh*fted and do nothing about it, the best option is to leave. If she can find even a few like minded individuals who want to change things for the better, then it is possible...

    Employment Law/Rights etc.

I find the part about less than 11 hours rest between shifts quite disturbing. There is lots of info on HSE website about fatigue risk. Contracting for 43 hrs a week is also close to unfair. EU MAX is 48 hours, so you would expect contractual hours to significantly under this. Breaks are also...

    Ornette Coleman Quartet

Strange; listening to this now and I really can't remember what I found so difficult about it. It's rather good. It followed on this evening from my first listen to corea / holland / altschul: A.R.C. So maybe it's all about context.

    Ornette Coleman Quartet

I've so far been unable to acclimatise to Ornette. I have a copy of This is Our Music and have never made it further than the end of the first track. Maybe indeed to try a little harder...

    Another new bike.

I would be going 700C and drops. I've ridden canal paths and bridleways (and still do) on my road bike with 25c tyres which granted, is not ideal but we get through it. With 32c or bigger, you can tackle a wide range of terrain. A Surly LHT would be great, as would a Dawes Galaxy / Super...

    Old vs new bikes

My old bike is a mid 90s Trek, so not really old. It is a very hard ride compared to my new bike, albeit that the new one is a lot more expensive. I can still ride the old one, but now I have a choice, the new one feels significantly nicer. For me, there is great value in new bikes, £500 gets...

Bike rack for car ideas please

I had the same dilemma and went with this: http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4_tab.php/car-specific-accessories/buzz_rack_buzz_quattro_tilting_4_bike_carrier_no_brp204/Qx%40w%2C6M42VAwp3%40Rb%7B%7EcC4ure5Jvj%60 Pros: bikes are not on the roof; it's pretty solid and it holds the bikes...
