Thank you for not pointing out that I said they'd never re-coup the R&D costs and then I later suggested they would!
With my simplistic 50% gross margins there is only 75kGPB left over after the sale - 150k goes to the dealer and it cost WB 75k to make the thing (in materials, machine time...
If the selling price at the dealer is £300k and both the dealer and WB take a 50% gross margin (to keep the maths easy) that puts £75k 'profit' for each one sold. If they don't need any of that to keep the lights on then 22 turntables would bring in £1M. But, maybe they didn't spend that much...
At 30:40 in the video below from hi-End last year is a presentation from WB on the turntable technology. Seems the goal is to be more of a technology tour de force than to enjoy LPs on. I can't see how they'll ever recover the R&D.
Supatrac sighting at Axpona - at 3:24
Though the credit goes to 'Supratec'! and no mention of the turntable, which I did not recognize. It has a similar form follows function look and I wondered could it be a Supatrac turntable? But no, after a second look I caught sight of the name Consonance...
AFAIK, the Analog Magik software uses 2-tone test signals on their discs and measures the IMD - but you have to manually adjust the VTA, azimuth and offset to find the minima. Not many test discs come with a 2-tone signal but, if you had one, presumably you could do the same thing by needle...
Finally (as The Rock used to say), I got to hear the clips through my system. First impressions when I listened on the laptop with headphones is that C is louder and brighter. I put the clips into Audacity and matched the results by YesMan. C really is louder, by 1.33dB in the left channel on...
By chance I found an old bottle of Elmer's wood glue in the garage with just enough left to do that errant side. I put a coat on top of the titebond layer and let in dry overnight and I was able to get the whole thing to peel off so the disc is saved.
I tried a couple of LPs with whatever wood glue I had lying around and it worked OK. Getting the peel started is a little tricky but it came off all in one piece pretty easily. The peeled glue looks like a papadum with the center missing. The glue I used was Elmer's wood glue but I ran out so I...
Er yes, there was much discussion on the WAM about LP12 torques (mostly from T O'K). I'd been waiting for months to use the suspension nut torque as an April Fool there but I couldn't because of the WAM demise so I used it here. Sorry.
At one time Fremer came out and said that the Onzow left deposits on a stylus. I think he got that info from JR Bosclair at WAM Engineering. IIRC there was a picture of a gummed-up stylus but no further details. I don't think Onzow were very pleased but never heard any more.
There are websites that specialize in that.
More seriously on the topic of China, keep in mind that there will always be someone, somewhere, willing to work harder than you for less money.
And millions have risen from poverty in China over the last decades. We support that by wanting the lowest...
