Despite my deep, deep love of The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, I wish to propose my ideas on perfect, unblemished and absolutely faultless album. Your suggestions are gifts.

Not easy

1. Dreamsville. Stacey Kent

2. Tracey Chapman. Tracey Chapman

3. Ingenue. K D Lang

4. The First of a Million Kisses. Fairground Attraction

5. Diaspora. Natasha Atlas

Many thanks in advance.

Mike

Radiohead - a moon shaped pool
The Verve - Urban Hymns
Steely Dan - the royal scam
Mike oldfield - ommadawn
Miles Davis - kind of blue

And millions of other albums that are superb end to end

T. Rex - Electric Warrior
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon*
Steely Dan - Aja
Television - Marquee Moon
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Wire - Chairs Missing
Kraftwerk - Computer World**

There’s a ton of long-form instrumental and jazz stuff I’d pick, but that may not be fair, e.g. Miles Davis Bitches Brew & In A Silent Way, Tangerine Dream Rubycon, pretty much anything by Klaus Schulze, Boards Of Canada etc.

*Throwing DSOTM in to question the OP. To my mind it is a complete coherent work, the only one they ever did. There is nothing that can be taken away, nothing that needs to be added. It is a whole, and like all others in my list the graphic design is an essential part of that whole.

**Maybe any Kraftwerk album.

Hmm that's a tough one. The album that first came to mind why I started thinking about this is Radiohead's OK Computer. To me that album is utterly complete and perfect from the first note to the last.

I wouldn't say it's my favourite listening and I don't listen to it very often but when I do, I always think it is a perfect work of genius.

Furious agreement on 2 and 4 (my original copy of First of a Million Kisses has been played *a lot* recently). Need to revisit 1 and 3 (although Stacey Kent live in Beijing of all places is one of the best jazz shows I’ve ever been to). Don’t know 5.

Oh, and The Blue Nile’s A Walk Across the Rooftops and Hats are undoubted additions to your list.

Some great pieces of work from the artists already listed.

I would like to add

Bat For Lashes - The Bride

The Beatles - A Hard Day’s Night
Steely Dan - Katy Lied
REM - Life’s Rich Pageant
Fairport Convention - we did on our holidays
Joni Mitchell - Blue

& the first 3 come from the greatest bands of all time.

There are absolutely loads more I could think of, The Sinatra Capitol albums from the 50s, Ella & Louis duets.

I agree with many of the others including Radiohead, Bends & OK Computer

As Tony said ... Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Furthermore can I offer you these delights:

Peter Gabriel III
Peter Gabriel IV
Kate Bush - This Sensual World
U2 - Joshua Tree (I know, I know, but it is)

and the most perfect of them all:

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
I’ve never disagreed with you more. I’ll give you a pass on Gabriel & Bush though.

Four perfect debut albums which subsequent albums never surpassed.
The Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground
The Specials - The Specials
Talking Heads 77- Talking Heads
Guitar Town - Steve Earle

Gorkys Zygotic Mynci - Barafundle
Arab Strap - Philophobia
King Creosote - Diamond Mine
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
