Glastonbury 2023

My find from Glastonbury 2023 was this:

PS: thought Sparks were awful... They just don't know when to give up... Just my opinion.

Well, you've got the performance name of the artist right. Though note that he is not a band. That is what he was known as when a she. Not that Christine was ever his or her real name. Was then known as Redcar. Now Chris.

Certainly one of the most brilliant and original songwriters around at the moment. And unlike most artists these days, currently very prolific. In old money (i.e. measured in sides of vinyl), has released about 4 albums worth in a little over 6 months.

Oh, okay, excellent performance anyway, I just assumed (incorrectly) that 'the Queens' was the partnering musicians/band.
I'll most likely be seeking out the Lps or Cds that are available, I really enjoyed it.

@nostromo Goldfrapp is first class

I downloaded Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' from YouTube on my Mac using ClipGrab, and I also captured the digital output from my Virgin V6 box playing the same YouTube file and also the iPlayer file. I only recorded the first 2 mins 45 secs as I didn't have the patience to sit through all 9 minutes of it! I normalised all files to peak at -0.0dBFS because the YouTube versions peaked -1.8dB lower than the iPlayer version. The waveforms and DR values of the YouTube versions are close enough IMO to conclude they are the same mastering. The iPlayer version has more dynamic compression applied, but the difference is fairly minor. Perhaps I should've chosen another artist's performance to analyse since 80s cookie cutter pop isn't exactly renowned for its high dynamic range.

Elton has packed it in, unless he does a Nadine Dorries on us.

Thanks for this. I thought my senior ears were deceiving me that it was all boom and no tizz as I could not hear the hihats. Must be mastered for TV speakers and in ear phones! Sad times

From the sets I've watched so far it seems to be hit and miss. The best sound I've heard so far has probably been Lizzo, very vibrant and punchy.

Was that directed at me? If so, what do you mean, I'm intrigued?

I was wondering wtf those two words meant too.

Huge respect for Lewis Capaldi, I really felt for him.. his biggest ever show surely, such an affable & witty chap, & he gets ticks right there & then. His crowd were adorable though (see I'm not all grump).

Quite like the Goldfrapp, if more suited to T in the Park imho. Christine queen: I find her/himself more interesting than the music, now; I think better/ fresher back in 2016-?

So far the highlight, & by -far & away- the most impressive & joyously atmospheric clip I've seen (admittedly I can only access the YouTube stuff).. is funnily enough a gaggle of white blokes with guitars, singing the songs of another gaggle of white blokes, with guitars :)

Lewis Capaldi is a truly talented singer songwriter, he really can capture emotion and meaning in seemingly simple but rather ingeniously composed words.
I really liked 'titled' but as you say that was years ago, her performance at Glastonbury for me lacked interesting songs/musical content and was more about attention seeking and trying too hard to be artistic... I was left disappointed...just my opinion.

Mary Wallopers- I think mentioned before in passing. My find of glasto. Wish there was more of the smaller tent stuff like this on YouTube.

Afaict they play trad. songs, but my goodness they swing: makes me want get drunk by noon.

There are multiple old man tropes being displayed. Music is not as good as it was, anything popular must be suspect & it’s not proper instruments.

One interesting observation, back in the 70’s, the equivalent age appropriate headliners would have been akin to Vera Lynne. Yep, that’s how enduring the classic acts are these days. It seems that the young will embrace these heritage acts but the classic old music bloke won’t do likewise with the upcoming acts.

It’s definitely more of an effort to keep up these days but I’m determined to not become an old bore;)

Some of the main acts, EJ, Blondie, Christie hynde, Sparks…….. all in their high 70’s.
So who are the new young acts capable of commanding the headline slot in front of 100,000+ crowd & taking over from the old guard?
Arctic Monkeys, hmm,
The Foo’s ok yep but they can’t do it every year.
Muse?
RHCP…. Not exactly a new act.
Lewis Capaldi, Ed Sheeran.
My daughter reckons Chris Brown could do it.
But they need 3 headline acts for each Glastonbury. They can’t just keep on wheeling out the same old geriatrics, but there don’t seem to be that many capable alternatives?

Glastonbury is a very expensive festival attended by many middle-aged and elderly punters. They demand their dad/grandad rock. Ever since the festival was gentrified decades ago and became the pop/rock equivalent of the Proms to the BBC it has relied on a very safe main stage playlist. There is always a lot of amazing stuff on the small stages, but the main one is just a corporate big-ticket event and in most respects dull as ditchwater. It is the gig equivalent of a 300 quid DSOTM anniversary box set. To my mind the best headliners in recent years have been rap/r&b on the other stages, e.g. last year Kendrick Lamar and Megan Thee Stallion both knocked it right out of the park, this year Lizzo was right up there as one of the best. I really liked Christine & The Queens this year too, that was the other big ticket act that made an impression.

To be honest I don’t see the point of Glastonbury despite spending so many hours sifting through iPlayer looking for new artists I may have missed. In that context it does work to a degree. Every year I find a few cool new things (this year Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul, Fred Again, Sudan Archives and Nova Twins), but in every case I’d far prefer to see them in a conventional small venue if I wanted to see them live. Sure, I enjoyed some old stuff such as The Pretenders as I like Chrissie’s attitude, but their first album is the only essential one and that was 44 years ago now. I have my UK 1st press bought at the time. Even Leftfield are dad-rock now. Scary but true.
