Lu's Oak. I planted this three year old seedling just before the death of the late Queen. And a month before Lu came to me.

Last Summer we had, even in high altitude Bromyard, some excessively hot days including two days of Met Office records of forty degrees, which is certainly unusual ... The little Oak lost half its leaves despite gallons of water, but kept the remaining ones till November. It certainly is a trier.

I was not certain it would bud this Spring, but it has!

By the time Lu and I leave this mortal coil this so far rather small Oak will be perhaps be fifteen feet tall and another fifteen years till it makes acorns, but we must hope for nature if we give it a chance.

Lu is quite good and mostly visits the little tree after we walk the common.

Just a throw away post, but please forgive.

Best wishes from George

Keep em coming George :D

Photo is of Bonnie who we lost 10 years ago, we had her close on 17 years I think it was.

First walk day today for Willow, end result was this :

Later on in sunny back garden play led to relax :

The pots are to stop her digging holes & then eating the grass.

Patterdales are adept at being comfortable in the most unlikely places.

Lu sitting happily if precariously on the back of my, should I say her, chair! About February ...

Best wishes from George.

PS: They would not be Terriers if they did not do this sort of thing. You have to love them, but like Marmite, if you don't love them then you would probably hate them. They are slightly mad!

Willow looks a loving and lovely natured little dog. That is so sweet! They have a way of looking at you so directly it is like they are looking with their soul straight into your own. Dissarming if you don't like that sort of thing, but so honest and expressive for those of us who do.

Lu has had a lovely day today. Firstly the by now routine but always enjoyable walk with Karen [who gave her to me], and her two Wody and Pie, at about nine on Sundays, and then over for a good six mile walk with my Polish friends J-, and P-, and their seven year old Frechie bitch. It is quite amazing how Lu interacts with Queene! Queene [spelled like that but said queeny] has known me since a pup, and adores me. But Lu does not approve of that much attention from another bitch. So it can get a bit fraught, as both have fairly feisty characters. But once off lead they played like maniacs. The older dog soon got into the darting about, but of course my Terrier is significantly more agile and much faster. Both were completely tired into contentment at the end.

No photos, but some may be sent to me before long. We walked from the Worcester Race-course grandstand right up the to the old [disused and now a wonderful industrial era museum and cafe] Water Works at the north end and then back the other other side of the course.

Then I set about some weeding for a friend. Not much work, but doing it on a Sunday? Well you have to catch the time when it is not raining to dig out Ground Elder and Mint roots!

I may have a day off tomorrow, depending on whether a client wants the garden for their various siblings and siblings in law and the next generation in peace from me working, but on the other hand weeds are really growing at the moment.

Best wishes from George

PS: Lu is very much asleep!

PPS: Day off tomorrow. Thanks be.

This picture shows P-, and myself [photo courtesy of J-, P-'s wife] with Queene and Lu at about noon, about a mile into our six mile walk round Worcester Race-course.

Lu manages that rare combination of being energetic and genial, rare in Terriers, but can happen if they are completely comfortable in their own skin. A question of confidence ... nothing to prove. It should be no surprise that Queene does not especially like Lu on Queene's own patch, but out they are like old friends ... In many ways Lu shows a sagaciousness in matters of manners that shows a wisdom far beyond her two years. I'd say that makes her in early twenties in female human terms. She is more like your favourite aunt than cousin in reality!

The photo in the immediate post above is at home afterwards. Totally done the job of the day and time to chill.

Just a silly post, so please forgive.

Best wishes from George

Today Lu met the two [Terrier bitches - one a JR and the other all spare parts, belonging to our local farrier] with whom she was first socialised only weeks before she came to me. This was on the normal Sunday morning walk with Karen and her two, Wody and Pie. Lu made a huge fuss of the two Terriers. All rather fun, but otherwise the day has been quiet, and just now Lu and I went out for a lunchtime amble in the surprisingly warm sunshine.

She suddenly did the Jag XKE lie down! Never seen her do this before:

To me that looks a most uncomfortable way to lie down!

AV8's little Patterdale does it [see a few posts up], so it must be in them as a bread! My old JR called Spot used to do it even in old age!

Best wishes from George

The above lie down pose is the one favourite position she has at the moment, it does look uncomfortable but it must be fine for both Willow & Lu.

Been away on holiday so will upload a few more photos later on. When we got back though we were both licked to death, she did behave herself according to the girls who looked after Willow, 4 walks a day now & getting happier around others.

Nice and relaxed.

Well a month in and this young lady is beginning to grow rapidly :

Plenty of daily excercise, calming down fairly quickly, still moments of madness though, she is still a growing pup afterall. She has been mingling with a few dogs in the park by us, one of the dogs is fantastic with her in particular, a spaniel called Mabs, like this photo, she is a lovely dog amongst a few there :

Dear AV8,

I have been waiting agog for picture updates of Willow, and she is developing exactly the same coat as Lu! I believe this is called the broken coat, which looks wiry but is actually soft to the touch, unlike the Ayredale which is rather rough and hard.

They go through stages, and I think their childhood and adolescence is a bit like this:

Four to six months in they start that teenage time when they seem less charming than when they were pups [or children], and by just over a year they become more or less like an eighteen or twenty-one year old, when they get more and more sensible and genial. Then they age and mature relatively much less fast for the rest of their lives.

Lu is a couple of months over two years now, and if you take the seven to one year ratio [dog to human] she would be fifteen or sixteen, but the reality is she is in personality more like a human in their late thirties or early forties, though with the energy of someone in their twenties.

I have been working rather hard trying to keep up with the weed growing season in gardens, so I have been not posted much because apart from work there has not been anything interesting to post about, but your post has brought me a lovely smile!

Thank you and best wishes from George

A few more from yesterday & today George.

First one is escaping the heat, that is her domain shelf now, the second one is tonight after park play with Mabs :

She might not look it but she is definitely getting longer in the body.

Thanks for the stages headsup :)

I’m quite late to this thread, but it’s a very heartwarming and relatable one… after several years without, I got a dog back in February. She was nine months old at the time and had never really been shown love and attention, she’d lived in a kennel in an out house a smelled pretty terrible, but she was just beautiful, and we bonded the moment we met, she’s my shadow now.

Contrary to popular belief for Dachshunds, she’s taken really well to house training, and apart from when she was unwell, we haven’t had any accidents since the day I collected her. She’s very loving and totally non aggressive, even with her soft toys, just a brilliant little dog. Her name is Lola.
