Met police to hand in weapons and stop killing black Britons

Of course they're not ,but threatening to hand in weapons in support of a suspended colleague,
not out of any consideration for the victim or wrongful shooting.
It's difficult not to think of these elite groups as having a culture of macho vigilantism.
Meanwhile the victim unarmed unidentified was shot through this car window.
Maybe an investigation will tell us they did the right thing.

Some people need to put themselves in the position of somebody who, rightly or wrongly, believes there to be a threat, with all the responsibility of having a firearm and responsibility for public safety.
Been there, didn’t pull the trigger, still had frightmares for years after.

Why?
Aren't they trained to avoid being trigger happy.
Are there not rules of engagement.
Has nothing been learned since Charles de Menezes.

There’s one flaw in all that: humans.

We make mistakes.

We fly planes into the ground.
We drown while scuba diving.
We cut the wrong bit during surgery.
We drive into stationary cars.

It’s going to happen, as sad as it is.

The car was suspect.
They rammed and stopped it.
They didn't know who the driver was.
They didn't know if he was armed.
They did know he was black.
They just shot.
He was unarmed.

As Tony says, humans make mistakes. Big ones when weapons are involved and there is a limited time in which to make a decision based on imperfect information.

How about wait until the independent enquiry is over?

That's boring - much better to have some working assumptions based on previous behaviour of 'all' AFO's' in the Met.

The family do deserve answers, at the very least. Hopefully the actual truth will out, either way. Our police should operate transparently and have accountability.

Disclaimer - ex AFO of 10 years. (1991-2000).

I'll go back to lurking - one thing this forum can do is police-bash par-excellence...

I did say maybe an investigation will tell us if they
did the right thing

You did, amongst other prose which I’ll ignore.

I have not been involved in MetPol F/arms in any capacity since 2000. I did mutual aid with them many times in the 90’s.

I have been involved in operational matters involving f/arms as a supervisor.

My initial view is there is no point in me explaining further. The investigation, press and general opinion will do the rest.
