Film and TV chat in general

I watched Red Road (2006) the other night and although it's not a film I'll ever want to watch again, it's a compelling film all the same. It's a dark psychological thriller set here in Glasgow but unlike films that showcase cities in all their glory, Red Road was largely filmed in some of the most deprived and dank areas of Glasgow. It is this that gives the film its greatest quality: authenticity. Having been brought up just a few miles away from the Balornock area, I totally recognise the shiteness of it. Authentic litter, authentic graffiti, authentic bleakness, authentic violence, authentic fear, just authentic shite. It obviously wasn't all shite back then as there were always some good people trying to do the best they could with what they had. But that shite backdrop was all pervasive nonetheless. There was just no escaping it... unless you numbed it with alcohol or whatever or actually upped sticks and literally escaped it.

The cast and plot are good, but the authenticity of the environment really is the star attraction here. You won't see this amount of shite in Buchanan Street!

MOVIE INFO
Text expanded.
Helsinki, 1945. The end of the war brings a new sense of artistic and social freedom for painter Tove Jansson. Modern art, dizzying parties and an open relationship with a married politician: Her unconventional life puts her at odds with her sculptor father's strict ideals. Tove's desire for liberty is put to the test when she meets theatre director Vivica Bandler. Her love for Vivica is electric and all-consuming but Tove begins to realize that the love she truly yearns has to be reciprocated. As she struggles with her personal life, her creative endeavors take her in an unexpected direction. While focusing her artistic dreams on her painting, the work that started as a side project, the melancholic, haunting tales she told scared children in bomb shelters, rapidly takes on a life of its own. The exploits of the Moomins, infused with inspiration from her own life, bring Tove international fame and financial freedom. There's a daily comic strip, a stage play and stories that continue to delight people around the world. But as she begins to find her artistic identity she has to learn to find herself. Her unrequited love for Vivica is preventing her true liberty and only by learning to break away from her can she truly be free. TOVE is a captivating drama about the creative energy of an iconic talent and her turbulent search for identity, desire and freedom.

I saw that a few years ago. Very good film but bleak. Like you I feel no need to revisit it.

Brilliant to see back in time in brum on bbc2 about the asian community in sparkbrook over the years

"Back in Time" as a whole run of series is excellent.

But for this version it has been massively cut back. Previous versions were 1 decade pet episode, but this is 2 decades per episode.

Massive cut backs which is a shame as it had been excellent in the past.

Excellent post.

My family on mothers side were involved with mining (Mexborough) & this is very much how it was portrayed. I find it very sad that communities were permanently split along such lines with many families falling out. Possibly anecdotal tales of father & sons not speaking afterwards are really heartbreaking.

A very corrosive time & Scargill certainly far from perfect.
I thought Brassed Off a surprisingly refined film and Stephen Tomlinson’s portrayal of a man on the edge particularly poignant.

The best actors tend to be good to great in most things, doesn’t apply here;)
They’re are great when they are committed and the role is right for them or the writing is good. Occasionally they hit truth and they have their magnificent moment. Even De Niro and Pacino can be average. Casey Affleck is more consistent as is Phoenix. Just takes one performance.

I’m not a massive fan of either De Niro or Pacino, think Tom Hanks is better than both. If you look at a really great actor like, say, Spencer Tracey or Jack Lemon they just don’t really miss a beat.

Actors are but like drummers, the ones people think are great never are;)

Lemmon was good. De Niro in Deer Hunter, Midnight Run, Casino, Goodfellas. Pacino in The Godfather, Scarecrow, Scerpico, Insomnia .Hanks is Everyman and sincere, like Cary Grant etc. Spencer Tracey was the same but not really in the same league as Fonda or Peck. Each to their own really.

Spencer Tracey was widely regarded as the best actor in Hollywood, I like both Fonda & Peck but Tracey changed acting, you are massively underestimating him to say the least.

Hanks actually has a really good range, he started off doing light comedy, utterly brilliant in Saving Private Ryan & Forrest Gump. Just a complete superstar who will be revered for years to come.

Worth having a read of this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_Tracy

Some fulsome praise from people who know far more either of us.

I don’t really look at what other people like. It’s what I like. I agree with Hanks in SPR. His
best acting by far. Forest Gump was fine. Tracey was good. Brando was better.
