All purpose cycling thread 2022

What a start to the cycling season - both good and bad.

The bad - some terrible crashes. Amy Pieters still in a coma after several months. Egan Bernal and Milan Vader both hospitalized and out for who knows how long, and now Julian Alaphilippe hospitalized and again out for an unknown period. And then there's Sonny Colbrelli having a heart attack after a sprint finish - poor guy - after a tremendous 2021 season.

The good - some tremendous racing, particularly in the one day classics. After initially looking like Jumbo Visma might win everything going it's been great to see the victories shared by many teams. It would have been great if Simon Yates could have taken an overall victory on the final stage of Paris-Nice - and he would have had Roglic not been hauled to the finish by Van Aert.

I can't remember any more details right now, but thought the season deserved a thread. Who will will the TdF this year ? Jumbo Visma have a very strong team, and Ineos are strong on paper, but will Pogacar overcome them all again ?

Nice thread and opening post. The crashes/injuries have been scary and for the TdF I can't see much past Pog again this year but hopefully not a rout this year.

I am riding in the FLAB Yorkshire ride in a couple of weeks, only the 50 mile but still over 5000 feet of climbing so quite nervous and my much delayed London to Brighton later in the year so despite not much riding so far this year a couple of runs out planned. I have a warm up 50/60k with some friends this Friday in Brighton and he South Downs so getting some hill practice in.

Quick question. If one were to sell a bicycle is there anywhere other than ebay I should consider? I'm not a "proper cyclist" so don't know if there are any cycling specific forum sites (like pfm) where it might be better to try to flog a bike.

My cycling for 2022 came to an abrupt halt at 11.45 on 17th March. I was hit on a roundabout by a car whose driver hadn't seen me.

Still recovering from the bruising and groin strain that resulted. As I was knocked out I don't recall the actual accident. I believe I was hit from the left side as I joined the exit lane of the roundabout. I then bounced off the car and flipped over dragging the heavy e-cargo bike with my left leg straining the top of the left inner thigh. I then landed heavily on my back and right hip. If I had not been wearing a helmet PFM might have lost a member. I can't understand people's reluctance wear them if they cycle in traffic.

Physiotherapy has started and my mobility is improving, I was at the Hydrotherapy Pool today, I think it will be a useful part of my recovery. Probably a few weeks yet before I get back on the bike. Brighter clothing will be the order of the day.

The bike seems to be remarkably undamaged as far as I can tell before I am able to ride it.

Sorry to hear that and I wish you well for your recovery. I have been a victim of a SMIDSY on both motorbikes and push bikes, they all hurt.

I have look on the bright side, the driver's lookout may have been poor, but her reactions saved me from very much worse. I ended up on the road facing the car!

An empty ambulance appeared seconds after I came to. Within minutes of arriving at A&E I was in a cubicle.

Do you have 3rd party insurance? Check your Home insurance policy you may be able to make a legal claim against the driver. If not I advise you join British Cycling, their legal cover is brilliant & you help out grass roots cycling in the process.

I’m afraid hi-viz clothing is a complete waste of time, no amount of bright colours can help against an impatient or inattentive driver. I wish you a speedy recovery.

The chain gang season is in full swing so I will be doing my best to keep up twice a week. Sometimes I have to really force myself out but I do like being fit.

Get well soon. My encounter with someone from The Stevie Wonder School of Driving put me in hospital for 2 weeks, followed by nearly 2 years off work. Better now, but it was a long climb out.

Edit- I was out on Saturday with 2 pals for 70 miles around the Lincolnshire Wolds. It was great. Lunch was in a very nice cycling cafe in Horncastle. Route on request, I devised it to avoid all A roads other than about 2 x half a mile where they are unavoidable.

Advertise it here, there are a good few cyclists. Gumtree is good for local buyers of standard items of value less than say a few hundred pounds. For specialist stuff try a cycling forum such as Cyclechat.

Well the Classic season has drawn to an end. Dropper posts on road bikes, death defying descents. Mathieu Van Der Pool and Pogacar almost grinding to a track stand before the final sprint at Flanders to the extent that Pogacar finishes fourth in a two horse race. Will Tom Piddock (Tom Pitstop? ) sort out his digestive system? Only a week to go to the Giro Italia. Will Chris Froome or Egan Bernal race any Gran Tours?
One of my mates had Fred Wright join him on last Saturday's club run. Ethan Hayter occasionally returns to ride at Herne Hill. We know another rider who is turning pro and despite being OTL gave a sterling performance at Paris Roubaix femmes. Seems like we're at an age when the kids of friends are making waves in the world of cycling.
Been pottering away on the bike but have lacked any real goal's / events over the last two years. Hoping to kick start things. I've got a 400k on Saturday and Ride London the morning after the Champions League Final.... Jealous of mates who are flying out to ride Mallorca 312 on Saturday. I'd loved to have been there but doubled booked and riding London Wales London instead.
Spiderous What type of bike is it? The great bike shortage of the 2020's has yet to abate. Demand is particularly high for top spec bikes.

400k in a day? Bloody hell, that's a long way. You must be out before dawn and still rolling well into the night.

It's an Audax so time limit 27 hours. Hope to roll out at 5:30-6:30 a.m. and be back home early hours of the next morning. Obvs not TT'ing it and factoring in plenty of cafe stops, maybe a kip stop on the last leg. Epic route on lovely lanes.

Good luck. That's a very long day.

I've just started cycling again after surgery on a hydrocele last year - a build up of fluid has caused me to have a testicle the size of a grape fruit. Apologies to anyone currently indulging in this fruit.
Results have been mixed with some setbacks so I have now ordered a couple of cutaway saddles. I may try a nose free ISM if that does not work. Anyone have any experience with this saddle?
Any help appreciated.
