Loud bangs from a suspected shooting

A couple of weeks ago at 2am police entered a house opposite me after a reported shooting in the property. The call turned out to be a hoax, but there were several very loud bangs which woke us up. We dashed to the window after the bangs and could see armed police shining lights into the property.

I'm assuming the bangs were the police "knocking" on the door. I'm assuming they wouldn't fire even blank rounds as warning shots?

Anyway, not a nice wake up, and worrying that someone deliberately caused that.

I used to live in an area in the east end of Glasgow called craigend and we had knee cappings nearbye. I recall taking a picture of the local pub about 150 yards along from my house of the 15 police cars outside, there were punter running out of the back of the pub with swords and machetes.
When we were selling up one of the viewers came to the door and said he would not bother coming in as he had served in Ireland and did not want to live in a war zone.

Maybe the Police weren't taking any chances and lobbed in some flash bangs?

I’m guessing the coppers used a shotgun with a solid lead round to take out the door lock/s. You don’t see them in the tv rozzer shows.

Having a read about breaching rounds, they’re frangible to prevent injury to those inside. They turn to dust after destroying the lock or hinge.

The door is white upvc and showed no signs of damage ... i don't know how accurate those rounds are?
They fire from very close range, under 6 inches or right on the hinge using an adapted weapon, the “bullet” is a type of metal powder bound in wax and it’s designed to dissipate into a powder as soon as it blows the hinge out.

I suspect this is very unlikely. Any discharge (so to speak) would require a lot of paperwork.

Say what you like about the rozzers (and there is much to be said), they are not utter morons.

In the meantime, gun deaths (including suicide) have overtaken car crashes as the top cause of death in America for people aged from 1 to 19.
4,300 in 2020.

I suspect 99% of them are top notch, unfortunately its the 1% who make the press.

I watched that video above of the chap using a shotgun to enter a premises. Far from thinking he's a weirdo, I admired his calm demeanour. He fired that gun like I would snap a twig.

No - Blank rounds are not used.

That would be a specialist Rapid Intervention Unit task. Very unlikely in the circumstances, but their uniform is very much more military looking than the standard TSG one.

I am not aware of any standard entry unit using this. Highly unlikely. They are many other ways of building entry that are safer in civilian life than using this method.

Sadly a minority do continue to let the majority down, tho.

NB - I used to be an AFO, and also supervised community impact after firearms ops until my retirement in 2015.
