Anybody running a McLaren 650/570?

If no joy here, consider joining Pistonheads. Not a nice place to be, generally, but the McLaren area is very active and full of advice.

I don't know if it is just a meme, but they don't have the best reliability/customer service reputation, which explains the residuals somewhat compared with other marques.

Sure, I've got one and so's my wife.

Hardly likely here. As others say, try Pistonheads, even if it does attract a number of people that you might rather avoid.

They seem to figure quite regularly in the YouTube crashes and stupid -driver videos. I bet they’re almost as dangerously snappy as a RWD Lambo. If I were daft enough to be considering spending that kind of money on a toy, I’d rather something less likely to wrap itself around a tree!

... I don't think so, at all

Such statistics usually say very-much-more about the driver, and the resulting gross excess of ambition over talent/training - than the car!

Cheers all, yes i will put a post on Pistonheads, i know a few on here have 911's etc just wondered if anyone had a McLaren, it seems a warranty/or a car that's had all the niggles/issues sorted is the way to go, i think there are few independents about for servicing and it's now possible to have the engine/box rebuilt instead of going back to McLaren for replacement units! Weighing up the pros and cons, although my head is telling me a simpler Exige might a more sensible option when the running cost and warranty are factored in and i could actually work on that myself!

I’d take a GT3 over a McLaren. Warranty costs per year are high compared to Porsche, which suggests McLaren aren’t overly confident in their own product. I’ve also heard lots of horror stories about reliability and poor dealer experiences, how many are true I don’t know but the same is not heard about Porsche.

Dealing with Lotus while ordering an Emira has not been a pleasant experience so far, to the point where I’m considering withdrawing from the process. You might have less need for dealer interaction if buying a used Exige.

Check out REPerformance on YouTube, they deal with everything maclaren and are regarded as a top independent garage

Very expensive service issues with McLaren. A GT3 is definitely a safer choice.
Unless you track they (and similar) are just too fast.

That's the case with most cars beyond the utterly pedestrian though, these days. I drive an Audi A5, the 3L diesel and it's great apart from the fact that if you aren't careful you can get into license threatening speeds very quickly. "I'll just overtake this, yeah this is great, I'll do this one too, wow this thing goes, oops, better back off." That's with a car that has what today is regarded as having decent but far from exceptional performance. What it must be like in something like a McLaren is nobody's business.

We have a dealer round here - had a test drive before I got the Targa 3 years ago. Maintenance costs are high

We frequently (say once a month) see them broken down or on the back of a recovery vehicle. We had two catch fire locally over the years.

I've seen 2 roadside fires in the last month, fortunately on the other carriageway. One a truck, well ablaze, on the M62 climbing up out of Manch, and the other a modern Mini with an engine fire on the A64 somewhere around Tadcaster.

Might be worth checking out a few of jayemm's Mclaren related videos on Youtube. The man has a genuine passion for the cars but one thing that becomes clear is that Mclaren have no interest in maintaining their earlier cars or in being helpful to the people who buy them, and many of the dealers appear to be less than useful/helpfull/worth the time of day.

Thanks all, yes i've watch the JayEmm videos on a father and son experience of the brand at McLaren Manchester. That's why i trying to ascertain if there is infrastructure is there to maintain a car outside of warranty, or does it need to be within the care/warranty McLaren, the car is so much more complex than something like an Exige which is a doddle to maintain in comparison. I like the idea of the 570 with simpler suspension, anti-roll bars instead nitrogen accumulators (need replacing with regularity) and all the pipework that snakes through the chassis of the car.
As for for Porches "my friends all own Porches i must make a mends..." a lovely car but they aren't for me :}

I suppose, again, Pistonheads will be able to advise on your local specialists/dealers. I wouldn’t even buy a BMW 3 Series diesel without a decent indie nearby. I’ve three or four Porsche and three Merc indies within about ten miles, and I’ve only seen one McLaren in this part of Suffolk in the last five years… ownership would scare me.

What is it about McLarens you like?

Agree, had a Porsche, didn't like it and then there is the Porsche w**ker factor to consider too. Other supercar brands (other than Lamborghini) don't seem to attract those types.

Which is ironic given the Porsche driver is more likely to be driving it and enjoying it compared with your average Lambo/Ferrari driver parking it up and posing for the Instagram kids to take pics of, or slowly driving it around London for everyone to see.
