Got any petrol or diesel?

No problems here in Espana, the European shortage is just propaganda to keep you lot a little bit happier.

Anyway it is just one of Govies bumps in the road!!

How do you explain the shortage of lorry drivers in mainland Europe?

no empty shelves over here though, so it is far less acute. The must be something about the UK that is causing the problem to be much worse. I wonder what it could be?

I don't quite get why we were fine for tanker drivers last week but not now, did they all wake up one morning and decide to stay at home?

There is something Orwellian about all these ‘crises’ that we keep having in the UK. Stoke fear/panic and create crisis, then you solve the crisis and everyone loves BoJo.

We will be having the formation of a Junior Anti Sex League, big posters of our glorious leader and telescreens next.

Will we really all come to love Big Bother?

As I understand it gents lack of investment and training the next generation of drivers but I openly confess politics annoy me and then I get a bit potty mouth and periodically Tony waves a finger at me and I get that. I tend to react at the naysaying as a core belief of mine is that you show foresight, long term thinking and grit to execute it and politics is not compatible with that.

Another example as I understand it is the demise of apprenticeships in the UK by the big corporates who used to invest in young people with incentives, accommodation, funded study and so on and used to fight to attract the bright students. Corporate greed and balance sheet first over recent decades has instead hired cheaper European labour at the expense of our own young people, the short term approach. Great for the company’s profits but poor for our young and future.

the frequent blaming of brexit for me does not cover what I am sure are many complex topics, my disappointment with brexit remains the incredibly poor media coverage across 4 years, I found it astounding that the entire media ( or at least parts of it) did not or could not clearly articulate in a pros and cons table the key issues or obligations in an intelligent summary form that the populace generally could look at and make an informed decision.

another random example is as I understand it that we have no new water reservoirs built in the past 40 years, how can this be for a growing population? I certainly wouldn’t blame brexit but the usual suspects on here will if there is a water crisis in the coming years. If my understanding is correct then we have to blame the water companies with their profiteering, poor repairs and astronomical leakage rates although I get that the then government of the day that deregulated that industry (or those that followed) can be blamed for not enforcing decisions for the long term.

my head hurts at this point thinking about politics so back to some bike cleaning, music and hobby reading for me.

Got 3/4 of a tank yesterday from Tesco York, no queue at all. Good news as I'm going to Apsley tomorrow.

It’s really odd, as soon as govt says we are ok for food or petrol the general public behaves to the contrary. However, same general public seems to swallow their lies when it comes to the election?

Rather odd behaviour to say the least.

The trick is to lie in a bullish, optimistic, blustery way. Look so animated that the audience pay little heed to the actual words.

Easier with un-tested ideas and concepts than with proveable facts.

Only a few forecourts were affected, but once the media get hold of something and fan the flames the rest is history. However there is a general shortage of HGV drivers and that has been a growing problem for years now. Three main reasons for it... Brexit is one (EU workers lost the right to work here and new border regulations make it much harder to work between UK and Europe) the pandemic is another (many drivers left to join the booming home delivery industry, few HGV tests and training opportunities in the lockdowns etc.) and the third (more long term) is the industry suffers from a lack of appeal to younger people and consequently has an ageing workforce. Better pay and conditions would doubtless help with this, but when you are governed by ****ers that think a zero hours contract based economy is a good thing and have a nation that broadly expects to be able to buy everything for next to nothing that isn't likely to happen. This has been a problem brewing for a long time and one the government have entirely ignored doing their usual 'head in the sand and hope it will be alright' thing that they do and now they need to own it as it is of their own making. It will not be sorted out by allowing some 'foreign' workers to work here for 3 months and anyone who thinks it will is a borderline idiot!

There was plenty, routinely dismissed as Project Fear. The problem was that people knew what being in the EU was like, warts and all. The Brexit promised land contained no such draw backs. There was no test to prove how you would replace what you have become used to, or indeed built a large part of your economy around. It was 'faith', we're so special we can defy economic realities and even gravity.

Campaigning on optimistic, even jingoistic hype and empty rhetoric is a heck of an easy sell compared to having to prove negatives. Throw in a bit of blaming the EU for your own government's decisions and you are onto a winner, it's the fault of those foreigners.

Nobody wanted the reality check, it got in the way of the groundless optimism and 'feel good' stuff. All the campaigners had to do was win a vote, they haven't got to deliver anything for the country. The country can go to Hell, they have their Brexit, it's not like an GE. They can be kicked out and they still have their Brexit and the tax dodging and de-regulation that they wanted.

My local garage had no fuel signs and a tanker filling it up on Friday about 5:00 now has no fuel signs out again.

Pete

Picked up my car after having some work done on it by a specialist. 35 miles in the tank, 50 miles from home. Queues at the nearby filling station, so decided to pick up fuel at the services next to the motorway junction. I figured the price would have made it an unattractive option for panic buyers. Wrong. No diesel. Oops.
Hypermiled up the M6 to the next services and filled up at £1.69 per litre! (Admittedly this was premium diesel).

The saddest thing for me is how complicit the electorate is in perpetuating the situation.
