Cricket 2021 - all things cricket for this year on pfm

Context, please! ;) You of all people should know the details here:D

At least 5 1st voice players out or rested. However the NZ batsmen played very straight against our very good bowling attack. We did not do the same against theirs today, and that’s what has cost us.

Rested! They hardly play at all these days. I know Archer has been over bowled and Stokes is out but that's about it

So is batting sensibly and not slashing about like it's a T20 game. Wickets thrown away in the first innings and they were at least 100 off a reasonable total for the pitch.
Now they're 122-9...and I can't comment as I didn't watch the highlights.
Batting has been the problem for years, not bowling or catching.
England...Collapse.
Doomscrolling the BBC yields:
"The Edgbaston crowd had not finished singing Jerusalem when the England slide began, Rory Burns loosely driving at Matt Henry's second ball of the innings to be caught at second slip."

There! Why do that?! Tbf to Burns he has been one of the few to show resilience...all the more important that he should stick around.

Crawleys defence isn’t good enough for a test match number 3 and he knows it. This doesn’t mean we should discard him though, maybe place him down the order at 5 until he has matured some more.

Sibleys technique, especially with his hands so far away from his body, has been found out and unless he changes quickly could well signify the end of his TM career.

So we need a new opener and a new number 3 plus bring back Bairstow as a specialist batsmen at 6 then Stokes and Butler.

Then again I predicted Bracey would get a 100 in our second innings so what do I know.

Yes very poor England performance on the batting front , they had very poor technique and getting out with a score below 10 is not how to play test matches , they made it look like NZ were bowling hand grenades ! The England bowlers also seemed to be a bit off song and not really swinging the ball for some reason , Anderrson normally gets a lot more wickets but lacked penetration

"It’s often said that England can’t afford to carry a specialist captain like Mike Brearley. But can they afford a non-captain like Root? Captains come in two broad types: the intense ones who are students of the game, and the bland ones who get the job by being the best batter. Nasser Hussain was in the first camp, and so is Virat Kohli (though he happens to be the best batsman as well). Cook was in the second camp, and so is Root: likeable, often admirable, but not very interested in the strategy. And so, for nine years, England’s Test team have drifted along amiably."

No, I’m sorry I don’t agree, @gavreid . We again have short memories. Not lost a series at home in how long until this year. Our away form is very intermittent, but that’s down to batting technique and the long form of the game being compromised.

Actually, I do think we have some very good bowlers coming up to replace Jimmy and Stuart (in due course). Robinson and Stone, for example.

For me, the current England team is very mediocre and is going to really struggle to compete against India and in the upcoming Ashes series.

The batting isn’t good enough, fielding poor and the bowling is the strongest part of our game but when Broad and Anderson are there no longer, I don’t see anyone of their quality coming through.

The thing I don’t get most about the selection for that second test was why not play a frontline spinner? Root just doesn’t cut the mustard.

Anyone been watching the women's Test match between England and India.

Have watched all three days so far, been really good, much better than watching the other English cricket team :D

At least in this Test match England have a chance of winning.

Yeah been very enjoyable to watch, unlike the blokes last couple of matches. Few really good T20’s recently too, if you don't mind said format.

Seeing this is a thread for all cricket in 2021 congratulations to New Zealand for winning the World Test Championship Final over India.

Great to see both sides respecting each others playing and a very exciting final days play.

Seems this thread is mainly about the English team, who in test cricket need to have a long hard look at themselves and their T20 team which won last night.

Of course maybe there are not many cricket fans on PFM these days, well of the game of cricket maybe, more they just follow one team rather than the game of cricket itself.

Nope I try to follow test cricket in general rather than limiting myself to England. One of the interesting facets of the game is the way the pitches in the different counties contribute to the development of their bowlers/batsmen and how they deal with this when touring overseas.

For example, I followed as best I could India’s remarkable victory in Australia last winter after being all out for 38 in the second innings of the first test and without Kohli for the tour.

Another interesting ODI between England and Sri Lanka yesterday, watched it all, Sam Curran might be a Ben Stokes replacement in the future.

England batting was good, great to see Eoin Morgan make a good score along with Jason Roy and Joe Root.

Strange to see Moeen Ali play yet did not bowl, maybe this is a different sort of resting for a team member.
