Penderyn doesn't do it for me; it's like they're all trying too hard

Maybe juist my tastebuds; but do agree re the sherried one, far too sweet & it did nothing but repeat on me o_O

I agree, I've tried a few, just not to my taste - unsophisticated, sweet and to.be blunt rough. IIRC I tried the sherried one and the Celt.

I liked the original Penderyn, but didn’t enjoy the Sherry cask finish version (too sweet). I had a bottle of Celt and it was indeed very nice, but I prefer Islay malts for peat. Celt felt a little bit like the peatiness was artificially introduced - like oaky Chardonnay where the flavour is from oak chips rather than the barrel.
Ah yes, the much derided vins de fabrication. Yuk.

OK wiseguys, perhaps you can advise me what to try next. My standard favourites are Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Lagavulin and Penderyn Celt. I also like JD for Old Fashioneds.
All recommendations welcomed.

What do you want from your whisky; more peated, or sherried, or Highland/Lowland/Speyside/Campbeltown etc?

Which Ardbegs have you tried?

Have you tried the likes of Springbank, Ballechin/Edradour, Bruichladdich, Bunnhabhain etc?

A few interesting recommendations from me:
  • Balvenie 14 year old caribbean cask
  • Cotswolds single malt
  • Kilchoman Machir Bay
  • Johnny Walter Green
  • Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair (Islay, but not peaty)
  • Gentleman Jack Daniels (if you already like JD)
Cheers
Steve

Thank you gents.
I like peaty, but not overly so; I thought that would be obvious from the list I gave, but apparently not.
I’ll refer back to your suggestions when I’m next on the buy. As for JD in Old Fashioneds. I’m always concerned that I will fall over after using JD. I had never considered anything stronger.

I wouldn't have said no to the Springbank cask strength. Currently discovering the delights of the standard 10yo. Also looking forward to a Kilkerran 12 on order.

So what's the best way of getting the heads-up on new releases before the great unwashed (ie me) get their snouts in?

I just bought a bottle of this Hunter Laing indie cask strength Islay : https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/hunter-laing/scarabus-batch-strength-whisky/?srh=1
Along the same lines as the Seaweed & Aeons CS recommended by G&T above...but a bit cheaper. The Seaweed is owned by Master of Malt and I've seen it at £40 before in their Flash Sales.
