Open letter to the Labour leadership and Shadow Education team on schools re-opening:

Dear Kate Green, Wes Streeting, Keir Starmer & Angela Rayner,

The Labour Party was founded and exists to represent working people. Millions of people are now living under Tier 3 or 4 restrictions, in areas where coronavirus cases are either high or very high. We understand that the new strain which has been discovered may be more easily transmissible, but we still do not understand enough about the health impact on different age groups.

From the start of this crisis, the Government have failed to provide schools with the adequate resources to enable proper physical distancing, so to say they are safe environments is simply not true. It is now widely accepted that the virus is readily transmitted from children to adults. In the absence of mass testing it is impossible to know those children who are healthy from those who are asymptomatic carriers. Parents, children, teaching assistants, teachers, caretakers, lunchtime assistants, and office staff are looking to us, the Labour Party, to speak up for them, and to hold this Government to account and to press them to do the right thing. We support the position of the National Education Union. We want you to do the same.

Schools should not re-open on the 4th January save for the children of key workers and vulnerable children. This is about the lives and safety of working people, children and the safety of our communities. Nothing should ever come before that. Do the right thing.

Yours Sincerely,

Laura Pidcock (Labour NEC)

Labour should be fighting for the moral high ground and re-educating against the whole right wing gammony shtick that the public has been brainwashed into believing rather than giving "dog whistle winks" to the gammon demographic that they are "just enough nationalistic, brexity and xenophobic to be worthy of their vote".

I know, I know... you have to get into power to make a change.... but how far do you follow policies you know to be morally and intellectually unjustifiable and against the historical principles of the party and the majority of it's MP's and members in order to appeal to "populism"?

Labour was founded to represent the rights of working classes but the problem a lot of people don’t want to admit that they are working class. People seem to want to be middle class. The infighting of Labour with the left doesn’t help. Although the world has moved on since the early days of Labour they need to realise their roots and fight for them but also peoples attitudes have changed and society has changed. The right wing media convince people that Labour just represent the non working people and that is a big reason why they vote for Conservatives.

I'm waiting for Starmer to be pictured having a socially distanced pint with Farage in some gammony pub and then giving a statement to the press about how he "obviously disagrees with many of Mr Farages policies but see's some common sense, common ground issues worthy of non partisan discussion in the interests of our great nation...."

I feel a bit of sick rising....

24 MPs out of 200

All of them absolutely right, schools are a petri dish and to deny that because it's inconvenient is beyond reckless. I was interested early on in the idea that school children somehow bucked the trend, but the evidence is that they do not. My sister (teaching assistent) and her family have the virus and it has been an ordeal. Her husband is still not out of the woods. Her school has been decimated (Redbridge).

Wow, an open letter.

This is pure politics, can the Labour Party not just grow up & adopt a position on this? This basically undermines any position that the Labour leadership takes.

I don’t think schools should open across January & the Labour Party should be stronger in ensuring that the necessary tools for home learning are in place. It is quite difficult for Primary Schools to both stay open for key workers & organise home schooling.

There is a good chance of strike action over this & I don’t think that will help home schooling either.

Constant pressure should be applied to that utter fool Education Secretary. Unfortunately the LP is pretty toothless at the moment.

Very true, the Conservatives are proving better at politics in terms of communication & winning elections. Labour needs to be better, has to have an aspirational element in its messaging as people, perhaps, don’t like to see themselves as poor even when they are.

The problem is that the Labour leadership team refuses to adopt a position. Pathetic moral cowards, the lot of them.

It’s worse than passively refusing to take a position, it’s actively abandoning Starmer’s election pledges. Moral cowardice combined with a great big F*ck you to keyworkers being put under enormous pressure and treated with contempt by an incompetent liar of a Secretary of State for Education

I’ve acknowledged that but an open letter is just grandstanding, it will do nothing. There will be people in the LP who want Schools to stay open no matter what. The government is currently being threatened with legal action by a teachers union; I don’t know whether there is political support behind it.

To be clear it is Head Teachers who are threatening legal action to force the govt to reveal the data behind the decision to keep some schools open.

Obvious questions are, why is the govt keeping this data secret? And why isn’t Labour backing the demand for it to be disclosed?

It will do a little.

On the subject of teaching unions and reporting of what they’re asking for, there is a certain amount of misreporting that seems to happen regularly and goes unchallenged. For example, this morning the front page of the BBC website says that ‘teaching unions have called for nationwide closures’, whereas this call has only come from one union, the NEU.

Contra-wise this government often claims it is consulting with teachers, when in fact it is only speaking to Head Teacher Unions and a small number of selected minor teacher unions who represent only small numbers of teachers.

Such a lack of proper reporting allows this government to claim is is consulting with teachers as a whole on the one hand, and condemn them as a whole with the other.

That Starmer has abandoned his pledge to support unions and instead supports this government is moral abdication by Labour and worse, another step to a one party system

That idiot Jane Moore from The Sun was just on Marr being exactly the idiot one would expect. Not even the slightest grasp of this being about a major viral distribution hub and preventing NHS overload, just vacuous popularist bullshit about children not being at high risk. Moronic. Just utterly moronic. That was the starting level for the show, Boris ‘Britain Trump’ Johnson on later...
