PFM DIY Help Exchange

Hi..I am in Biggleswade in Bedfordshire.

I will need help installing Avondale NCC220 modules into a Naim NAP140 power amp.

Anyone on here be of assistance? I would be very grateful....my last foray into hifi modification ended up with black smoke and a dead amplifier.

Nye, you might have more luck with people viewing and finding a helpful Fishie, if you start a new thread in the DIY Room.

What a shame most people here seem to be in middle/north of England (or abroad). Is there no-one around mid, west or SW Wales?

I have the software and can create schematics and layouts in Atium and OrCAD. Before I retired last year I was one of the R&D Engineers for iLight and Zero88. One of my jobs was assembling the prototypes and I have a selection of soldering irons and can work down to 0402 (and 0201 at a push).
Below is a replacement for the PSU board of my Pioneer SA-9800 which I had to repair and I was concerned that it wouldn’t last so wanted a backup. Two years later the original is still working fine.
When it died I was already to scrap it and buy something new. But I liked that amp, so on a whim had a look to see if there were any second hand ones available. When I saw how much people were prepared to pay for even dead ones I decided that if it could be fixed it should be.

That’s impressive
Does your avatar name indicate you might be somewhere in Wales?

I am no technician, my best effort at electronic DIY has been dual-railing and recapping a couple of SNAPs, but the thread is a very good and friendly idea, so here I am from Northern Italy.

I am in Bath, have a decent soldering iron, hot air gun, heat shrink etc. Im often doing something every other weekend, be that making cables, swapping out a few caps or more tricky stuff like SMD work but, not that often, I am usually more careful assembly work than design etc

Super ! I am in the town centre, perhaps a coffee in town and a chance to compare systems !!!

My 2 channel is currently 2 of the 8 channels in my home cinema but its still respectable not withstanding the FL, FR are too far apart (works fine with film) My last project was a little scary removing three SMD 5mmx3mm clocks and wiring in three ultra low noise clocks to my £5k Lumagen video processor, very pleased with the results after a scary moment or two

Thought I'd ask here as I won't be going back to London for a few months at least.

Dropped off a 80's Planar 3 to a friend as a present in Walthomstow all working fine yesterday and had given it a look over and replaced belt/bearing.

After a few hours of working wonderfully he switched it off and then came back 30 mins later and its DOA.
Video called him and got him to swap plug fuse and check connections. Nothing.
Assuming it is resistor or something and hopefully not motor.
Any chance of someone in the area to pop over and sort him out? More than happy to hand over some beer money and a heartfelt thankyou if it's possible.

Many thanks for reading this far...

Sam

I'm in Northern Ireland, a bit north of Belfast, and although no expert, can fiddle about with turntables, replace components on amps and speakers, repair cables, for fun.

Hello - I am in Kensington, London. I build amplifiers and preamps with DHT tubes and have a big stock of DHTs like 01A, 26, 10Y, 112A, 4P1L, 2P29L.

Furthermore I have a big stock of tubes in general including a lot of rare Radio valves from the 1930s. I also have a stock of capacitors, transformers, chassis parts etc. Plenty for sale. I am having a clear out so good prices.

Instead of making a new thread, i thought i'd ask here first, although its not strictly DIY, anyone know a good repairer in Cheshire/North Staffs/NW, i need an Magnum Integrated amp (one channel down) and an amp pack for a Dynaudio speaker repairing (both Class A/B)? cheers.

I'm a molecular biologist so if you have any DNA questions...But seriously I'm on the Moors above Hebden Bridge I have a room full of old synths and broken hifi and I'm on a steep learning curve. Have valve tester - not quite sure how to use it yet! - scopes and other kit. Happy to help with synth questions but to reiterate I'm fairly novice.

I am in Sheffield (as are a few others) and I can help with soldering, troubleshooting, recapping/servicing, I've also serviced tape decks (R2R and cassette) for a good few years now and I've got most of the alignment tapes/gauges/scope/vtvm needed.

I've built a few pre amps/power amps/phono stages and DACs and have modded retail kit
You might be just the man I need, I have a Nakamichi LX3 that started to eat tapes and then stopped playing altogether. Probably a snapped belt but do I need specialist equipment to service these? I can solder and repair most things but I've never touched a tape deck. I heard that the orange caps will need replacing but I removed a few and they all measured spot on.

Orange caps should be OK given it is a later deck, it is worse on the 48x/58x/68x series decks. The ones in the bias oscillator go first. A head alignment guague is needed for Naks to set the pinch roller arm height, and also head tilt, a track alignment tape is needed for head height, as well as the usual azimuth, speed, PB level/EQ etc. It was probably eating tapes as the capstan belt had gone slack and the inter-capstan tension was wrong. Also finding a replacement belt that gives close to original W+F specs can be hard, there are alot of not great belts sold as "kits" out there. A replacement idler tyre will also be needed if it hasn't been done in the last 10 years or so.
