I'm not, as a rule, a fan of guitar solos; but Adrian Belew's on Bowie's Boys Keeep Swinging, and Talking Heads' The Great Curve are works of feckin genius.

I tend to agree regarding a lot of solos, hence my inclusion of Geordie Walker, an amazing guitar sound and not a solo in sight
 
Another in the "What couldn't he play?" category : Ry Cooder. So much more than a slide guitarist.

I tend to think the same overall re. solos but Jan Akkerman and Capt Sensible deserve a mention as being melodic without being too erm, indulgent (apologies if they have been mentioned).
