Stuff that works (for me at least)

ks.234

Half way to Infinity
It occurred to me that having bought stuff that doesn’t work, it might be useful to post about stuff that does

I bought this for a quick fix on a flat roof and it really works rather well.

I'm really glad you posted this, my mums shed roof needs fixing it's felt and has a few leaks, problem is when the shed was put in her garden by the previous owner it was pushed tight into an awkward corner, making replacing the felt difficult

What's this stuff like then?

Cheers

Super sticky tape about 6” wide. Reasonable flexible and soft enough to be trodden/ pushed into old felt. Seems to have stopped a small leak in my flat roof. If it lasts until spring when I can effect a proper repair, I shall be pleased.

I'm sure it will make it through the winter. When I moved in here 5-6 years ago the shed roof was mostly knackered, the felt in tatters with patches on patches. I largely ignored it and it deteriorated. The crappy sterling board was rotten anyway. Then after a winter storm last year or the year before the felt all came off and there was fresh air and light visible. I had cadged some ends of 19mm ply, well if you are doing it you may as well overdo it. In spite of being absolutely buggered it took a full 3-4years to actually fail. The rotten board was sufficiently rotten by this time that 5 minutes with an axe reduced it to bin-sized bits.

Shed roofing felt is dreadful stuff these days. It costs a lot but Onduline lasts longer than most sheds.

Repair of flat roofs - if you can find the leak, just pour bitumen in it.
I acquired my first block of bitumen from where a road repair gang had left some after the job was done; I am not sure how little you can buy, or price.
Get an empty bean/fruit/pea/whatever tin, bend a bit of the top over so that picking it up with pliers is easy. Break some bitumen, put in the tin, melt on the cooker ring. Pour. Job done. I have patches not fail for several years before fitting new felt over the top on my small porch roof (using the same method)

(Flat roof grade roofing felt is VERY thick and heavy and nightmarishly expensive.)

As good as gorilla tape is, I feel it may not cope with this, I’m surprised it’s still standing. The only place it’s going is on a bonfire. It’s in the wrong place really, gets battered by the prevailing wind and rain, so will put one somewhere else and use the base for another seating area with a pergola over it. Another job to do...

Here’s mine, with Onduline roof. I say mine - I mean a friend’s that he has just designed and built himself, clever bastard. But he’s going to build something similar for me next year. Admittedly I haven’t told him yet.

I was delighted with this led strip lighting.

For ages I couldn’t find a continuous 6 metre length, then this popped up on Amazon. Fitted a 6m run in a kitchen ceiling recess, it was properly adhesive and very easy to install. It also cost peanuts so I bought a second set for another project.

Novostella 6M White LED Strip Lights Kit, 1800lm Dimmable Strip Lighting, 360 Units SMD 2835 LEDs, 12V Tape, 6000K Daylight White Ribbon with Adapter and Clips, for Stairway

Unusual to see a grave with a tap attached. I guess it's useful for topping up the urns with the flowers in, though.
