russel,

That's an exceptionally valid point, and in my view we should consider how much money is spent on frivolous, useless and luxurious things that could have been directed toward better use across the board from conserving wild populations to assisting others. I certainly wasn't advocating that people should spend a bundle on wire or Gucci purses or whatever.

I seem to be misunderstood more than usual today, so I'll leave this thread to others.

Damn, Russel beat me to it: hi-fi porn is a symptom of a society where pointless consumption is the norm. It's relatively niche but the broader issue isn't, and is destroying the planet.

I'd also argue that the defective reasoning that seeks to justify (e.g.) magic fuses exists on a continuum with the thinking that would deny climate change (because "it's only a theory").

I don't lose sleep about this stuff, and tend to steer clear of cable threads, but the material and intellectual ramifications of spending lots of money on foo (and trying to defend it) are not negligible, in my view.

Drood,

I know I just said I was going to post anymore in this thread, but your comment is bang on. You're absolutely right that mindless, pointless, conspicuous consumption is destroying the planet. And the economic system that enables and encourages this to happen is the same one that doesn't provide a decent living standard to all.

A grand spent on a fancy cable would make negligible different to my system,* but it might make a huge difference to a struggling family here and especially in the developing world.

And woolly thinking in one area that really doesn't matter could be a gateway to wooly thinking in others that really do matter. (Although my experience is that wooly thinking — or critical thinking for that matter — generally permeates all thought and is rarely confined to a single facet of life.)

I've taken my deserved lumps.

Joe

* Jez, read zero difference here if it helps. :–)

I dunno, drop a speaker with a spike on your foot and you could get a nasty flesh wound, which, if untreated, could have fatal consequences.
OMG you’re right *sounds of scales falling from eyes*, I could trip over while installing a fancy cable and accidentally get it tangled round my neck and strangle myself.

It’s a fair point, but where should the line be drawn? Do we eschew central heating and instead put another layer on indoors? Maybe stop using the internet socially and just use it for serious purposes like watching serious fact-checked news sources, and kittens. Maybe only vegetarians should be allowed to purchase non essential items? Which would include clothes which were not purely functional, and more than one pair of shoes.

There are more deserving and larger targets for your guilt trip, so count me out until you’ve fixed them, please.

To be honest, I'd be more concerned about exposure to ... Poison and White Snake. That causes serious often irreparable damage.

Joe...

Joe, the Australian White Snake is beautiful, and not Poisonous at all.

Okay, it is really a genetically mutated Slatey-Grey Snake, but still a lovely reptile. :)

Sean,

Definitely. Whenever I've had a flu shot I've been instructed to sit in a waiting room for 20 minutes to make sure I wasn't going to have a serious anaphylactic reaction on the way home. Is this practice common in the UK and US, too?

If someone is in this group — dangerously allergic to something in the vaccine — definitely pass, but for everyone else the risks far outweigh the benefits.

Joe
I used to have a strange reaction to the tetanus jab, but I haven't had one for years. It was a 3 part thing in the UK, I went after school, aged 15,16 or so. Sent straight home afterwards, no problem. 24 hours later I felt like sh*t, my mother thought I was malingering as I was supposed to be mowing the lawn. A week later I was back again, no problem, but 24 hours later, the same aga in, I felt as rough as hell. This time we reported it to the doc, he recommended holding off the third jab.

So like others here I don't regard any vaccine as risk free, but the balance of probabilities are that the benefits vastly outweigh the risk. It's like household insurance, I could save a few pounds every month, which is fine until the house burns down.

Anyway, it's easy to get sufficient takeup. If you get a vaccination certificate, it's then up to airlines, pubs and restaurants if they want to see the ticket before serving you. No vaccination? Nobody's forcing you to go on holiday or to the pub.

A non-poisonous Australian reptile? Can’t be indigenous then.

(I do love the Aussie tendency towards literal naming: slate grey snake, snowy mountains, etc).

Caused by a flammable fuse, was it?

Edit: got any evidence for your assertion? I’ve just spent a little time googling and come up dry.
This drifted by recently:
"Magic Fuse consists of an unbreakable copper rod, is rhodium-plated, and features quantum processing."

That's not a fuse any more.

Then there's the beeswax-filled fuses. Beeswax is flammable. Not a great substance to put in a device whose function is based on melting metal.

unbreakable copper rod? I bet I could break it in less than a minute with conventional hand tools and a bench vice.

I’m relaxed with it, but I’m far more concerned with landfill and environmental waste than dictating how others spend their own money. To my mind a nice cable or whatever will never end up in landfill, it will always hold a value, always find a new buyer. The thing I detest is buying cheap or badly designed shit that is designed to break and to be thrown away. That is what we should be fighting here, and I really do try to push the ‘green sustainable audio’ angle on this site. pfm has been about this right since the very beginning as it grew out of the Naim used market, and that is great, reliable and easily serviceable kit. We’ve just grown from there. Any ‘fancy’ cables I own (a few vdH interconnects, one Kimber PBJ, and some MW mains blocks) have been bought second hand, should never wear out or break (I could obviously fix them if they did) and they could be sold on again for what I paid. As such ‘free’ cables that do not hurt the environment. I just don’t get the hate to be honest.

At 65, a bit overweight, former heavy smoker, drinking a bit more than guidelines, self employed, male but otherwise fit i'll grab it asap.

71.. bit overweight, CV disease, ****ed right ventricle, failing left ventricle, etc.. blahh

I'll risk any licenced jab.

I certainly won't be first in the queue, if at all. I already eschew the 'flu jab.

Why? Have you ever had 'proper' flu? I reckon you'd feel differently if you had..

I'll risk any licenced jab.
Spot on Mull. That’s why I said ‘NHS vaccine’ because it will have passed multiple layers of safety assessment before approval as well as safety monitoring in use. It’s all about balance of risk- no treatment is 100% safe and as you pointed out in the rest of your post- the risk of not being vaccinated is likely to be far higher. A successful vaccination programme will mean society can function again and folk with conditions that put them at much higher risk of death or very serious complications need no longer separate themselves from ordinary human interaction.
