Could lead to a breakdown in pharma patent system.

As I understand it, a patent is only valid insofar as the granting authority deems it so - the granting authority being a branch of a country's government.....

Of course the other possibility is that the GOP dump trump & run another candidate for president
This may throw the Dems completely off kilter & remove the core motivation of a lot of voters - an anti-Trump vote (although I also believe there is a large anti-GOP vote too)
Biden is not inspiring & it may be the only hope the GOP have?

Gotta hand it to Putin, as well as calling the shots with Trump and Johnson his constitutional changes have been published and are available ahead of the vote. It used to be an old cold war gag that Russian football results are published just ahead of kick off.

There are small signs of rebellion in the party, mostly centred around masks. It's also encouraging to see a number of social media platforms limiting or flagging Trump speak. It may be the start of something. Yet results in Colorado's 3rd district suggest otherwise.

It appears to be a "normal" commercial transaction and therefore has nothing whatsoever to do with the patent system. The function of the patent system is to confer on inventors a limited monopoly (20 years from application), in return for which the patentee agrees to publish his/her invention. Pharmaceuticals are unusual in the patent world in that the 20 years can be extended (typically for 5 years), because of the high risk (of 10,000 compounds, you're lucky if 6 make it through clinical trials to approved drugs), high cost (typically in the billions of any currency you care to name) and the length of time for regulatory approval and therefore sales (on average 12 years from initial application).

Remdesivir is an anti-viral, which may work in some COVID-19 patients, but it is no panacea.

Interesting article about Biden’s VP selection process.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/30/biden-vice-president-346149

Four have emerged as front-runners: California Sen. Kamala Harris, Florida Rep. Val Demings, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and former national security adviser Susan Rice.

I like Susan Rice - lukewarm on Kamala Harris, - don't know much of Val Demmings or KL Bottoms, but it seems Demmings has the edge in experience, and may be a good person to try to heal the divide between law enforcement and the black community. All are miles better than Pence.

So is a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Rice, given her background and experience, would probably be the safest choice. Both Harris and Demings have a good mix of domestic and foreign policy experience via their committee assignments. Demings time as Orlando's Chief of Police, and Harris's time as California's AG, could work for or against them - hard to tell at this point.

Bottoms seems to me the longest shot, but perhaps the most interesting. She does not have much foreign policy experience, but unlike the others, she has gained chief executive experience as Mayor of Atlanta. Also, Biden said explicitly that, given his foreign policy experience, he was less concerned about whether his VP had the same on day one. Bottoms has had a lot of media exposure as a result of the Rayshard Brooks case and, IMO, she has handled herself very well in an extremely high pressure situation.

Not that it comes as any surprise but Covid-19 bushfire in the US has spread to > 50,000 new cases yesterday with Texas, Florida, California & Arizona accounting for more than 25,000 of new cases. Some predict 100,000 new cases per day will be breached soon.

It's a horrible vista & pitiful how TyphoidTrump is spreading death throughout the US.

4th July weekend still to come which no doubt will further demonstrate stupidity, selfishness & lack of simple common sense by a sector of the US population - let's see how many there are as a indicator of the national character?

I’m hoping that the intelligent, educated, reasonable Americans are observing sensible precautions. If there’s any upside to this pandemic, we could do worse than see it turn into a redneck plague.
