Naim CD3 repair or upgrade?

Am happy with din output a digital output could be handy but I think bigge gain come from better power supply
True, but to my mind you need to fix it as a first priority. I do many repairs, but as a mechanical engineer, CD players are not a good place to start....but then you might have a different skill set, and different priorities:)

Hi well as a mechanical engineer myself I get your point hence when funds allow I will price repairs but conscious of what a working cd3 sells for against what it will cost to repair

Ah well I understand, been there in my younger day, which seems a hell of a long time ago, hope it works out for you
Cheers

well not had a go at the CD3 yet but stripped the donor player and fixed numerous faults and got it working so definitely got a working laser and mech now. Stripped it out and see if its needed.

might get brave and take the cover off the CD3 if I get the time.

Wow - full of electrolytics rather than tants!

It plays disc, but no sound, right? Download 1541 datasheet and check +5 / —5 / -15 Volt supplies to it. If that OK, check for +/- supply voltages to the opamps

Saga continues been with a local specialist for a while now so he has - Replaced Electrolytic + Tantallum Capacitors in Power Regulator, Audio Output + Muting Circuits. Fault still evident. Suspect / Possible D/A Converter IC faulty.
so looks like transport was indeed ok.
I take it TDA 1541 as fitted to this player are impossible to find?
time to scrap it or hope yet?

You can source them on eBay relatively easily, how worthwhile it is is up to you! If you want to stick with CD there are some cracking players for relatively little money on the 2nd hand market, and many other options these days.

Depending on cost, it would be a massive shame to scrap this player. Good luck sourcing a chip if that is the way you go

Depends I suppose on "as fitted to this player." There seem to be plenty of TDA 1541 on eBay or you could buy an old TDA 1541 CD player of lesser quality and pull the chip from there?

(no idea if these would work but might?)

Before changing the DAC do make sure that you have bit clock signals, the bit stream from the digital filter and the L/R word select signals. Those are pins 2, 3 and 1 respectively.

I don't have it is still with the local guy he is pretty sure the dac is fried. In short term could a digital out be fitted to use an external dac as an sure it would make a fine transport. Don't know if possible I'd the dac is damaged

Yes, page 17 of the SAA7220/B datasheet contains an example of how to implement a 75 ohm digital output.

I have no DACs - believe me I'd love to find a reputable source of the good ones. I do have some of 4x digtal filter chip.

I still have stock of 5 S1s (but 1 promised to a member on DIY Audio if he ever fixes his...he‘s been working on it over a year, worse than me repairing my CDI :)), so guess I can let 1 more go. But check prices online first, then make me an offer on a genuine one :) I cleaned out Studer (I think) of their spare stock a few years back - they were selling standard 1541s and S1s at same price :)

Oh, and try google for the data sheet...

NB to add to the above - it is always the SAA7220/B version you want... explication from archives..:
