More potential Tory sleaze

I think it is entirely unfair to smear entrepreneurialism. Vast numbers of perfectly decent businesses exist, pay their taxes and provide great employment opportunities etc. I’d certainly run miles from anywhere where the means of production was state owned. I do however firmly believe in fair taxation and contributing to high quality state infrastructure and services, as do huge numbers of businesses big and small. For me that’s not just getting the homeless off the street, making the NHS work properly etc, I mean top-tier museums, art galleries, cycle lanes etc etc. Take pride, do it right, and tax appropriately. I’m obviously a small business owner, as are many of my friends, and we all detest the Tory penny-pinching, corruption and sleaze. Don’t tar us all with that brush!
Tilting at windmills.

WE DON'T WANT TO GIVE MARXISTS DOE
In all seriousness, it would be hard to think of a better expression of Britain's ruin than those seven words.

Anything that stands in the way of a powerful few's ability to vastly increase their already vast wealth is seen as "Marxism".

The fact that the £40 million would have gone into projects to improve the lives of many poor people doesn't even register in the minds of these people.

The illiteracy is the icing on the cake.

These people are greedy, callous, and stupid.

These people are our rulers.

So now we have to go to Tory fundraisers to level up the field. FFS

Yep - I was listening to BBC R4 Today program for first time in months this morning - and that interview came, I simply couldn't believe he actually said that. "Well anyone who wants to talk to a government minister can go to a Conservative party fundraiser to get access to them". The mind boggles. So that's it then, cash for access is just fine then?

And yet... they will just keep getting away with it, and the man-on-the-Clapham-omnibus just shrugs his shoulders.

It's good when one of them says out loud what they all actually think.

As for people not caring, it's more that most people don't know. This kind of thing crops up and gets buried in the news cycle, and the context is never fully explained: like, how planning decisions are supposed to be made, how they're actually made, what the consequences of the process not working are. When a lot of money is put into proper journalistic investigation, and into publicising the results, and when editors keep plugging away, then people can really care a lot, e.g. the expenses scandal.

The man on the bus invariably votes for them out of fear that Labour will ruin the economy.
It’s like Trump- they carry out a sustained assault on public standards until you become inured to it, then it takes something really outrageous to make the public notice. Cummings or a Minister would probably have to kill someone while drunk driving before Johnson felt it necessary to sack them. In this case a rich property developer/ porn site owner bunged a political party and exploited his relationship with a minister to get a crap development crowbarred through against the decision of the local authority.
Jenrick’s emotional outburst in the Commons spoke volumes. He got caught and decided to come out fighting. Johnson has backed him. We are ****ed with this sort of corruption in government.

^ This. In a nutshell. The £12k bung to the Tory Party was simply a gesture ( of intent). There would have been huge benefits to flow downstream, once Jenrick and others were out of office. Depriving the poorest local residents of local authority services around Desmond’s Sodom and Gomorrah would have been titillating to both Jenrick and Desmond as well as further enriching Desmond.

Yes. The fact that Desmond was comfortable to signal his greed and callousness so clearly in that text to Jenrick speaks volumes about the cosy relationship between Conservative MPs and the wealthy individuals who own them.

Amazing photo, just needs Harold Shipman and its done.

PS The real Cold War Steve, like so many others, has been to the beach today (Twitter).

I’d love to know the exact context as if that is real it is one of the best political photos ever taken, maybe one of the best photos ever taken period. Just twisted beyond comprehension. Johnson at his most drunken, arrogant and sociopathic, the child cowering, and Desmond advancing himself in predictably grubby sleazy style. The whole Tory ethos captured so perfectly. Its so good, so powerful, my guess is its a photoshop knock-up! If not it is as if Martin Parr took paparazzi photos.

I'm almost certain it's real. Here's another from what looks like the same event (like you, I'd love to know the context):

In this one, the other people in shot look to be having an OK time so it's not as powerful as the one with the cowering child. Also, the metaphor of Johnson pushing Johnson ("pulling strings") is missing.

Boris has just thrown that kid off the swing so he can get on it, he probably gave her some rant in Latin or something then shoved her off.
