Anyone compared high end Class D power amps?

Clipping is clipping, just pick a distortion level and compare the wattage of the two amps at that distortion level.

Part of the logic was that clipping character is different...for sure it is with valves vs ss. The logic was that to get similar peak power behaviour with class d vs a/b, you need a higher continuous power rated class d amp.

Aye, when I refer to class D re high power requirements, it's with respect to the relatively cheap, cool-running way you can get a lot of them. Not necessarily behaviour.

There's no difference in head room, clipping etc between class D and anything else. There is also no difference between valves and SS clipping.... just between high NFB and low NFB really at the end of the day...

a few days in to trying the bel canto ref 500s stereo amp , a fairly expensive amp at 2500 pounds [ i guess because its made in usa and exchange rate] . however they tend to last many years and are very well built with excellent paintwork , the switches feel quality and having had in excess of 12 or more BC products they are very reliable . using this with a marantz sa8005 into a black ice audio dsd dac . with a BC pre 3 vbs . Its a bit fussy with albums , does not really like the old lalo scifrin stuff I have like clint eastwood sound tracks but extremely good with many other albums .

The thing about this amp is it makes your feet tap.. in fact it just makes you want to listen . Its most certainly not as forgiving as the silbatone hybrid which you could play ANYTHING and it would sound good but the BC has that electricity , that pzazz if you like . The black ice dac makes a huge difference to the sound , having had a standard one here recently

The sense of live sound is very very good , in fact spellbinding on Rodrigo Y Gabriela

Peter Gabriels marvellous soundtrack , Long walk home sounds atmospheric and draws you in

some specs on the amp

two independent mono boards in a single chassis. Independent power supplies and isolated input signal filter technology reduces high power amplifier energy for a cleaner, transparent power.
  • Max Power Output: 500W 4 ohms, 250W 8 ohms per Channel
  • Minimum Load: 2 ohms per Channel
  • Peak Output Current: 35 Amps per Channel
  • Balanced Input Impedance: 200 Kohms
