Mogami interconnect/rca cables?

Hello,
i recently bought the Mogami 2972 speaker cable on the advice of Shahinian distributor. I am very satisfied with it. Which RCA cables from Mogami are good?

Patrick Dixon, a member here used to make them. Don’t know if he still does but you could PM him. Phonography used to make them. Again, I’m not sure how active Phil March is now. It tends to be Dynavector, Well Tempered, Shahinian dealers that use Mogami, so a google of those might turn up results. Finally, you could contact Pear Audio, the distributor of those brands, to see if John Burns knows.

The only feather in my hifi cap is I ‘discovered’ 2972. I got John interested and he did the rest.

If you fancy a bit of DIY, Eichmann bullet plugs are actually quite easy to solder on.

When doing co-ax (which 2549 isn't), it's best to do the shield first, then straightening the plug wrt the cable puts the core right in the bucket.

With the 2 conductors plus screen of 2549, quasi-balanced is an option where the shield is connected at one end only.

P.S. Having offered the above, Neutrik's Rean brand NYS373 plugs are excellent VFM.

Yes, most of mine are made up the way you describe. Eichmanns may be old news now, I don’t know. I’d go bare wire if I could, I do with 2972.

I have various other Mogami cables in cupboards but I’ve forgotten the number: whatever was considered best before 2549. I can dig stuff out if anyone’s interested.

Just to add, I use a mixture of Mogami I/Cs in various systems but also Mark Grant stuff that is no nonsense, good value and very well made. You could ask Mark if he’d attach plugs to a cable you supply. He’s pretty approachable. Also, it’s been a while since I browsed the Mogami catalogue, perhaps you can find an even better cable.

Good stuff is 2549. It really is worth learning how to solder - not only do you save money, but it's very satisfying! It's really very easy.

I have some Linn interconnects from approx. 1993 (they’re black). I don’t know what the plugs are but they’re such a tight fit you feel as if you could be damaging the rca socket when you disconnect them, you have to use so much force.

I have always liked the eichmann bullet plugs as they make a firm, positive connection with little force required on connection and disconnection.

Linn Black seem to be about £85 for 1.2 metres which is good value. The modern Eichmann is available here: https://www.hificollective.co.uk/phono-plugs/eti-research-link-rca-plug-1100-copper.html. So the cost with these, made up by someone like Mark would be around £100 but I suspect worth it. Sorry, the first bit of this message turned green.

£35 on ebay, there's a few others available on ebay for £25-£50 as well.

Out of interest, Linn Black is Mogami what?
Then I advise people to buy it. What plugs do they use?
I've just now had a look at one of 4 pairs of Linn Analog Interconnect here and the cable is co-ax. Unless something has changed since these were introduced, then these are not Mogami 2549 (which is two individually insulated conductors with a braided copper screen).

Embarrassingly, I happen to have a copy of the Linn drafting drawing of what is internally known as CONN 454 (aka Linn Analog Interconnect, now described as Linn 'Black' Interconnect) dated 18NOV99. The design specification for the cable is as follows:
  • INNER CONDUCTOR: 45/0.08 SOFT COPPER
  • CORE MATERIAL: FOAMED PEF
  • CORE I/D: 2.5mm
  • BRAID NET MATERIAL: Soft 70/0.10 COPPER
  • OUTER SLEEVE MATERIAL: BLACK PVC 5.0mm OD
  • RCA PLUG: ELKA part no. EGR 071 (with an 8.0mm hole for strain relief).
From Linn.co.uk 'Black Interconnect'
  • Double layer braided and foil shielding for excellent screening from mains frequencies
  • 45-strand copper conductor
  • Outer diameter 5.1 mm
  • Available in 1.2m pairs, terminated with RCA phono connectors
  • Also available in custom lengths from Linn Specialists
Looking at Linn's current interconnect offerings, perhaps it is their 'Black Balanced' cable that is closer to Mogami 2549. As minimum, balanced would require 2 cores plus shield.

No idea about now but the black interconnect and T-Kable was 2549, I've got some 10 year old Linn black ICs in the cupboard and they are mogami 2549.

The plot thickens, as ever in hifi. Frankly, I’d just buy Mark Grant or Blue Jeans and have done with it if you don’t do soldering. The only (genuine) 2594 I use now is from the phono stage.
