Following on from my Black Friday posts...all the gear for my sons gaming PC has arrived.

First questions:- I take it we need Windows 10 64 bit. What's the best way to buy that?

He knows more about this stuff than me but I'm just keeping him on track

I know it won't have wifi but have the house cabled for LAN so not an issue.

What actually happens when you connect all this stuff together....hope my son knows!

There will be some drivers for the mobo to install.

You don't have to buy Windows 10 Pro. It can be downloaded from the MS website https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO

When installing just select that you don't have a license key and it'll install but give the occasional nag bottom right of screen. You can then at your leisure buy a license as above. You can add WiFi at any time using a small cheap USB dongle.

Cheers,

DV

Nice system, I love the Lian Li cases and have one myself. Very nice quality.

I have one of their small ITX cases sat here empty that I modified a few years ago to fit in a closed loop CPU cooler and a big GPU. Nice little cases, well made.

Funnily enough I had a Lian Li ali case bought from overclockers around 20 years ago. I also bought a thunderbird CPU that could be modded to overclock plus all the rest of the kit from them. A few years ago the power supply went bang so I gave the whole lot away except the disks.

Had fun over-clocking the CPU and RAM until the thing halted.

Getting stumped on what connectors on the ASUS board we need to use for a few things.

The RGB light from the CPU fan to the motherboard for starters. Naming on board isn't obvious so trying to find a document we can understand from ASUS site.

I'm not up to date with the current RGB madness, but motherboard headers haven't changed much for decades so I'm fairly sure it will just come off a standard fan header or have it's own separate power cable fed directly from the PSU via a 4 pin Molex etc.

Andy what mother board did you get?

A quick google shows you have a couple of options RE: the Wraith RGB, you can either just use the RBG header off the cooler for basic RGB control, or to utilise the full AMD RGB control madness the extra cable is to go on a USB header from the board, if you want to do this then you must only use that cable and not both it and the RGB header onto the cooler.

Once it's up and running I'd stress test it. I used prime95 and core temp to measure the temperature on my recent pc build.

IIRC I read somewhere that if it lasts about 1/2 hour without crashing then the large majority of the time it's going to be OK.

It's also interesting to see how the performance your build compares to others - Here're the results of mine - https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/20469640

I think we've found where they go.

It's alive anyway...
