Cricket - The Ashes 2019

Andrew C!

Been around a while....
Now the dust is startIng to settle after yesterdays event, we can look forward to the Ashes.

So, for openers, who will open for England? Roy is a shoe in for me...

Who makes way for Archer? An unfit Anderson, or Broad?

Good question. Let's assume a decent wicket with seam on day one moving to spin on day four ...

1 Burns
2 Denly
3 Roy
4 Root (c)
5 Buttler
6 Stokes
7 Bairstow (wk)
8 Broad
9 Rashid
10 Anderson
11 Archer

Subs and specialists

12 Woakes
13 Moeen
14 Foakes
15 Vince
16 Curran
17 Pope

I repeat from the World Cup thread that I would like to see the WC final team picked as the Test side for as long as it takes Boycott to either (a) explode or (b) resign from TMS. Nothing personal Mr Thing, but he’s an arse (and I wouldn’t be surprised to find a Brexiteer too.)

Aside from that obviously Woakes is an automatic pick as he plays for the PRW, so after we have waved bye-bye to Sir G I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like

Burns
Roy
Vince
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Curran
Woakes
Rashid
Broad
Anderson

Roy at number 3 for me. Imagine him developing into a sort of cross between AB, Gower and Sehwag.

Burns and Denly deserve a bit more of a go. They didn't completely disappoint.

Vince need to be left out for a bit, fume, have something to prove.

Actually my 1-7 just get into the team based on 2018 batting averages (championship and England). Never mind that some of them can bowl, keep and captain. They are the right 7.

Having Stokes, Curran and Woakes (and possibly Rashid) in the middle is more of that have a pile of kinda OK all rounders as a middle order. Have x batsmen and y bowlers. Yeah - OK - some might do something else OK-ish, but unless you are Botham, Flintoff, Stokes or Rhodes you need to be good enough at what you do properly. On the right pitch that might get Woakes or Moeen a game without an injury.

And leave out Archer? Because it is unseemly? Because he has only just learnt how to shave? Why not play arguably your most natural and deadly bowler? Inexperienced? Well then give him some experience!

(It would really be nice to see Hameed come back into contention for next year.)

I don't understand why Boycott is being mentioned, yes he almost certainly is an arse but he is the best summariser in the game & a Yorkshireman. Roy is a shoe in, I would be tempted to have Bairstow open & put Buttler in at wkt. I reckon Sky will do another PR stunt if it gets to 2:2 with one to play.

God is a Yorkshireman and Sir Geoffrey is his prophet.

In the same way that some Christians have a problem with the homophobia, sexism, slavery and rather odd views on what kind of clothes you can combine in the OT, I have a problem with Sir G's views on Brexit. But about all things Cricket he is generally infallible. "If he does that again, he'll be out. The opposition has seen it and placed the man". And lo, when act was repeated the wicket was taken, just as the prophet said.

He's a proper right wing tory, lives as a tax exile in Jersey etc. I don't share his politics but he is entitled to them. He does know his cricket though.

As much as the idea of general infallibility appeals to my wishy-washy liberal nature (‘tell me, is your God infallible?’ ‘Well, generally, yeah...’) I still need to set my egg timer and turn the radio off when his TMS stints begin. Otherwise the amount of smashed equipment gets a little expensive.

I'm not sure the selectors will leave Woakes out. But I suppose he is a little like Anderson, but not as nagging.

I could see Root sucking it up and batting at three, with Roy at 4.

England suddenly are awash with choices, other than openers. 3 onwards they are falling over themselves with options.

How about Bairstow to do a Gilchrist?

Boycott was an effective if frighteningly dull cricketer, think Tavere without the charm. He is a decent summariser for cricket, but nil else. In other respects he looks and sounds pretty dreadful. I don't know if his fellow Yorkshiremen think of him as a credit to them, I certainly wouldn't.

Yorkshire is full of Boycott types, my late grandfather had some of his cussedness. He is a popular but divisive figure but that is typical of how we view our own. If you are not from Yorkshire then you are not allowed to have an opinion of the 'great man' ;)

Boycott has a better average than Pietersen, Cook, Gower, Trescothick, Gooch, Vaughn, Strauss...

Of modern English players (i.e. finished or will finish their careers after 1970) only Root has a better average than Boycott. And he needs another 20 tests to be taken seriously. And he's from Yorkshire. And he don't play flash neither.

Class will out. And thee sees it in t'average.

(and don't get me started on uncovered pitches, bats today vs. then, amount of cricket played, THAT West Indies attack...)

I have no opinion on Boycott the cricketer. Actually I do, but that isn’t the issue here. I just want him off the radio. In fact that shouldn’t be the issue on this thread either. Sorry Mr C!, I’ll shut up now.

Strong Yorkshire = Strong England. Root is from Sheffield which makes him extra special.

Who am I to argue with a fellow of Boycott's own county. :)

"If Geoffrey had played cricket the way he talked he would have had people queuing up to get into the ground instead of queuing up to leave."
– Fred Trueman on Boycott's commentating career in 1993

Very true that. My late grandfather once refereed an 'old Scarborians' charity football match, he sent Fred Trueman off for swearing.

I think it's time to let Anderson and Broad go. I'd like to see a bowling attack of Archer, Woakes, Woods, Stokes and Rashid. I'd also bring back Hales to either open or come in at No.3.

I might have missed the reasoning but why is Root at 3 in this scenario? 1 and 2 are the imponderables, Root at his preferred 4 and Roy fits the mould at 3 - England has a decent record when a belligerent, South African gobshite bats at 3.
