Oh, and the artwork was by Bridget Riley.

[edit]

I'd query the date in the MM snippet - I think it should be 1973.

Yes, I know the artwork was by Bridget Riley - her name is under the artwork on the rear sleeve. Yep, 1973 is the release date re: Discogs.

What I have not found is anything related to the label artwork. Normally it is a black & white graphic usually referred to as 'twin girls.'
My copy has coloured labels, hence why I had the ballsache of listing it on Discogs.

If yours is this one:

https://www.discogs.com/Faust-The-Faust-Tapes/release/13872369

Then the label has been coloured in with a felt-tip. Look at the blue label - you can see the pen strokes.

yes, that's it.

It is definitely printed, not 'coloured in.' It is easy to discern that it is printed when the light hits it.

Gordon Giltrap. Matter of Time.

One of our finest guitarists.

GG recouperating from recent surgery, good to see him today and doing well.

Look out for new Who album, out late this year with GG as a guest.

Sorry old chap, but coloured versions exist...

Just found this > https://rarerecordcollector.net/virgin/

and the Virgin logos are here on Discogs https://www.discogs.com/label/750-Virgin

Whilst I only have your photo to go on, I still stick to my original thought and that's for a number of reasons:

I know that a coloured label exists (I have enough early TD / Gong and Oldfield with them) but it was not introduced until 1974, a year after that LP was issued and withdrawn. Look at the difference between a 1974 Virgin label and the one on your copy of 'Faust Tapes' and you'll see huge differences in the dragons' colouring and the gradient of the sky. You'll also notice on your version that the blue of the sky, apart from being uniform and flat, does not meet the outline of the girls' hair which looks like someone's tried to make it look like a 'proper' Virgin label. Also, given the LP was a budget release, it's unlikely to they'd use a coloured label, never mind make it the first release to use one.

If you also look at VC502 (Gong, Camembert Electrique) and VC503 (Front Line) both were released after the colour label was introduced and both of them also use the B&W label exclusively.

There's a useful link here about Virgin label variations and your label isn't there although I acknowledge it's possible it doesn't have an exhaustive list of label variations.

Anyway, whatever version you have, it's still a great album and even though it was a compilation of sorts, I prefer it to 'IV'.

Just finishing the 3rd evening and 3rd part of Wagner Parsifal. The digital Karajan version is on Tidal, via Roon. A whole lot easier than leaping up and down to change LPs!

The Mrs was commenting (just short of moaning) that it was quite loud last night. I tried to explain that it had quite a dynamic range - and then had to explain what that meant.

Having listed it only today on Discogs, I am sure someone at Discogs will shoot it down if it is fake. I will stick with my thought that it is printed.

I have an original 1973 copy of this on vinyl that I brought at the time of release. Details and photos of sleeve and label as listed on Discogs (master release) are correct. The label is in monochrome, not coloured in. Mine has has the same matrix numbers as listed there as well VC 501 A-1U, B-1U. Painting is 'Crest' by Bridget Riley. Rear of sleeve states "The Music on this album, drawn from Faust's library of private tapes, was recorded informally and not intended for release". Released due to British interest in the band. The tapes were left as originally recorded with no post production work. It was sold at the price of a single as they regarded it as a 'bonus release' Yes I think I paid less than 50p for it. Rest of rear sleeve has various reviews of the band.

Let us know what happens.

yes. I am going to get the record out today and the wife and I will have another look. (wifey has the regular 2 eyes working, whereas I get on with one eye) I am still sure it is printed!

Let us know what happens.

Well, there you go. I got the magnifying glass out. Seeker_UK, you have my apologies.

I thought I would look through some of the other early Virgin L.P's I have been given, but not got around to sorting/playing yet...
Here is what I found >

Some adult colouring going on there! To be honest, it looks more like watercolours than felt-tip pen. My guess is drugs were involved... The labels on the left are dot matrix printed.

(Sleeves for those interested)

gerry mulligan - final recordings. mellow and smooth - but not Smooth.

Duke Ellington - money jungle. Always want to like this more than I do given the players ...
