Linn LP 12 servicing and upgrade.

Hi, I am looking to have my LP 12 serviced and possibly a Keel or Kore installed. The last time I had my deck serviced was a few years ago by Oranges and Lemons, the guy who did it made a great job but he was due to leave the next week. I was wondering if anyone could recommend O&L or any other company who would do the work to a high standard. I am based in SE London but would not mind a few hours drive.

Thanks.

Billy Vee in Lewisham service them I believe. Never used them for this myself but I have bought from them and they seem sound. Their Linn guy is certainly an enthusiast: grabbed me as I was going out of the door with a Rega and insisted on giving me the full tour with patter.

Since you don't mind a few hours drive then I can highly recommend Colin Macey at What You See and Hear in Beaconsfield. He's been servicing LP12s for decades and in more recent years has setup some LP12s for magazine reviews on Linn's behalf too.

+2 for Peter Swain. He agreed to fit an Armageddon and Stylus to my LP12 - even though I hadn't bought them from Cymbiosis. I also had a few other bits fitted that I did buy from them and a full service on the deck. You are so right about Peter binning the springs that he doesn't like. I was permitted to watch the fitting of the items and the service while Peter worked. Great conversation and history of Linn and a good chat about cars. Almost two hours and several coffees later, Peter set my LP12 up in the listening room and left me to it for as long as I wanted. Great guy and very accommodating and the other members of staff are great too!

Another vote for Colin Macey at 'What You See and Hear' in Beaconsfield ..... top bloke who knows LP12s inside out, and importantly there's no b******t banter !

Had to take my LP12 to him after a so called 'guru' closer to home had made a right pigs ear when working on it. Colin took photos of the complete and utter shambles of the job as evidence .....

If you don’t mind a drive, head to Leicester. I wouldn’t have anyone else touch my LP12 other than Peter. About 9/10 years ago Peter carried out a full rebuild of my original 1974 LP12. Fantastic job. He fitted a new cartridge last year, only required very minor adjustment after all that time. I’m sure many will also speak highly of Colin at WYSAH.

I would strongly recommend Cymbiosis. I have personally seen Peter Swain working on decks and he is extremely diligent and fastidious. In addition, they have a great number of LP12s all set up with different levels of upgrade options so they can easily be a/b compared.

TBH though, you shouldn't have to travel from one end of the country to the other, just to get a record player serviced!

Another for Peter at Cymbiosis. When I had my deck fettled with him last year he noticed an issue with my AT ML740 cartridge that I'd not noticed. I hadn't bought it from him but a quick email of my invoice and 5 minutes later I was the owner of a brand new 740. Highly recommended

Why not invest in a jig and do it yourself, why pay someone £150 to adjust a three springs and put a drop of oil in a bearing. It’s not rocket science like these “experts” like to claim. It’s a chassis supported by three springs in compression.
The last expert that set mine up did a crap job as it was out of alignment on return home, I won’t embarrass the expert but ever since I do my own. Plenty stuff on the net showing what to do.
I paid £100 for the jig brand new off a fishie.

I'm amazed the distances people wish you to travel - by the time you've driven back it'll probably be out of alignment again! (only joking...)

I've been a customer of Grahams Hifi for nearly 40 years, and they have been looking after my Linn for nearly 30 of them. They are a *very* long established Linn and Naim dealer, and Ray Horn, their Sondek specialist, will be able to perform any upgrade or servicing you require. They are quite straightforward people to deal with in my experience, and as they live in Islington, not miles for you to travel. Try https://www.grahams.co.uk/contact if you wish to see if they can help you.

Good luck with your upgrade!

Another vote for Colin Macey here. A year or so back, when What HiFi wanted to review a Klimax LP12, Linn asked Colin to set it up for the review. He’s no slouch.

Another recommendation for Billy Vee on Lee High Road, Contact Ian. he's a Linn specialist. In fact Ian's the only person to work on my LP12.
