I'm no great whisky buff, but I do like a nice Speyside. Picked up a bottle of Glen Moray with the weekly shop in Sainsburys's on Friday for £18. I've just opened it: a vey decent drink. Cheers peeps! Pip pip!

It’s not bad at all. I was in Majestic last year when they had it on offer. £12 a bottle, 2 left, so I grabbed both (long since gone)!

As someone who doesn't like whiskey (Southern Comfort anybody?) what's the best one to start with?
Is Speyside the easiest one to start with - if not, then please tell me what to look for..

Steveinspain you need to learn how to spell it. From Scotland Whisky, yank or Irish stuff Whiskey.

Having got that right, do you like smokey stuff?

As a complete non-expert I'd say yes to a Speyside for starters, as opposed to strong peaty whiskies like Laphroag or similar, which are like drinking a bonfire laced with creosote.

There are also some very nice Irish whiskeys - as opposed to Southern Comfort!

Where to begin?

What is it about Southern Comfort you dislike?

Aberlour 10 yo. Rich like M&S cake with a lot of currents in it. Better than viagra if you feel inclined!

Laphroag ... like drinking a bonfire laced with creosote.

:) Or turf freshly rinsed in carbolic soap..according to a friend of mine

I'd suggest in semi-seriousness, folk should start with Laphroag - it makes all other whisk(e)y seem fairly palatable by comparison.

On the Irish whiskey front btw, Jamison (of any variety) is a pretty solid starter, and readily available - or Green Spot if you're prepared to look a little harder and feeling slightly more flush.

Famous Grouse, good ole Bells or The Macallan for something a little different.
I'm another Lagavulin fan but wouldn't recommend it as a starting point (peaty and smokey....gorgeous).

Just managed to find a different vodka, Czar from St. Petersburg, very nice. Not the expensive, tasteless fashion stuff flooding the market now.
Others are Moskovskaya and Evolution. As a random outsider, very cheap and should-be-nasty Jupiter vodka (Vietnamese!) but drinkable and perfectly good when mixed. (unlike e.g. Smirnoff zero taste and Absolute sweet muck)

Oops, whisky, no e.. Sorry!
I like Southern Comfort but that's about as close to whisky as I've ever got, and the only whisky I've ever tried was (I think) Jamesons, which I couldn't drink.
I'll have a look to see what miniatures I can find and give them a try as a starting point, but I assume the better ones are not sold in such a way..

Actually, Jamesons - Irish with an 'e'! - while not everyone's cup of tea, is pretty inoffensive stuff. Maybe you just don't like whisky, or whiskey! No harm in that. :)

Guess only real men drink the stuff...
I'll have a pint of lager top and sit quietly at the back..
