Tom Watson has said in The Observer that a second referendum if the only way for Labour to beat Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party in the upcoming MEP elections. https://www.theguardian.com/politic...eferendum-only-way-to-beat-farage-says-watson

"Labour will never defeat Nigel Farage if it continues to “sit on the fence” over Brexit and offers only “mealy-mouthed” support for a second referendum, the party’s deputy leader says today.

"In an extraordinary intervention that exposes the tensions at the top of the party over Brexit strategy, Tom Watson warns that Labour will lose to Farage’s new “far right” Brexit party in May’s European elections if it continues to give the impression that “we half agree with him”.

No doubt Corbyn will be digging out his Mealy Mouthed Dictionary to frame an answer i.e. do nothing. May and him are exactly the same - they both want Brexit and no chance of Remain winning a second referendum.

Second referendum is only way to beat Nigel Farage, warns Tom Watson
Labour deputy leader in shock intervention that threatens to ignite row at party’s highest level

Why am I unsurprised? No one has been saying this on this forum, or arguing this point of view convincingly and with conviction. It's a bolt from the blue...
Sorry, obvs another instance of the media's massive unfairness to our Jezza, and emphasising, no, make that manufacturing splits in this much loved dinosaur, sorry, peoples parliamentary party.

No doubt pfm's official Labour spokespeople will along soon to put us all straight. Corbyn and his mates aren't doing badly out of the deal though. Tatler calls them champagne socialists. The days of half a pint of mild have long gone.

So who can you vote for in the European elections, if you're a Remainer? It is a real problem, unless you go Green.

Nick Cohen has written dismissively about Labour's leaders in The Guardian.

"The inability of the leading opposition party to oppose extends beyond its sneaky fudges. Labour is no more challenging every half-truth and whole lie made by Nigel Farage than it is exposing the empty nationalism of the seeming limitless supply of Tory leadership candidates. It’s almost as if Jeremy Corbyn and the upper-class Stalinists who surround him are so lost in the infantile leftist belief that the EU is a capitalist and militarist conspiracy, they would rather let the right have its way than reverse Brexit. Without leaders, Labour voters are meant to solve Labour politicians’ problems for them."

Labour has been leaderless for a long time over Brexit, the most important peacetime issue of the last 45 years.

That piece is worth re-posting every week. Fair play to her really accurate and well crafted. Eloquently describes this man and what he is and stands for. It would be nice if the Tory papers could run it every week to try and get the message across to their readers.

I still like the Le Carre characterisation "he was a barmaid's idea of a gentleman."

The thoroughly modern bigot.

https://www.theguardian.com/comment...shioned-thoroughly-modern-bigot-suzanne-moore

"As usual, Rees-Mogg’s religious faith is used to excuse his appalling bigotry. He is a Catholic and this kind of fundamentalism is always anti-women, but for some reason we are to respect it. I don’t. It has no place in public life.

Far from being iconoclastic, this MP’s views are entirely predictable. He is a fund manager with interests in the tobacco, mining, oil and gas industries. His path to parliament was Eton, Oxford and investment banking.

It is true, then: he is the real deal. The real deal is not a charming, upper-crust throwback, but a thoroughly modern, neoconservative bigot. Views that verge on fascistic are fine if dressed up in tweed with a knowledge of the classics thrown in. What a laugh! No one who thinks like that could get elected, could they? That would be a sick joke indeed."

The headline suggesting shock intervention is a bit over the top. It is very true that Labour need to get the finger out and become more forceful. The half way house model has got them to thus far but crucial they got off the fence now. Sometimes events move quicker then you hoped and their strategy which I don't like but can understand will fail unless they are decisive now. They are obviously No brexit or at worst soft brexit so sing it from the roof tops and champion the fairness of going back for a confirmatory vote on the deal negotiated or remain.
Nobody has anything to fear from the second referendum. If the Brexiteers are correct they will walk that anyway. If not the 'will' of the majority will have prevailed. Of course it would all depend on the margin of victory. Farage was right he said 52-48 was unfinished business.
He for once was honest but only because he thought his side was the 48%. If a second referendum was tight the turmoil would continue. I can see why the EU would prefer the UK to just accept the current deal or add a customs union to it and try and move on.

No, Farage is off again, and who is that half running, half stumbling along in the dust behind like a toddler excluded by the older kids, screeching "me too, me too"?

Labour - The "me too, me too" Brexit Party.

It has a nice ring to it.

Wonder if Labour have had badges and placards made up saying this? I don't suppose they'll be wearing and waving them at the Extinction Rebellion demos today, because Jezza refuses to speak to the protestors.

What a revolutionary he is.

If Labour unequivocally come out in favour of a confirmatory referendum they might just win the EU elections. If not the Brexit party will win as the ‘remain’ Vote is split.

Not holding my breath.

It’s a great opportunity for an unequivocally remain party, with centrist policies, led by a credible statesman with good communication skills. They would absolutely clean up.

More dirty deeds and fcukwittery by Banks and Leave.EU, this time manipulating BBC coverage:

Revealed: Brexit group covered up its targeting of right-wing extremists
Brexit-backer Arron Banks repeatedly denied that Leave.EU appealed to National Front supporters – in a bid to get the BBC to drop an investigation
- from Channel 4 News.

Brexit really is rotten to the core. Justice needs to be served on these self-serving, bullying, manipulative far-right b*stards.

Ch4 News is almost unique when it comes to good journalism. The BBC is at the other end of the scale. You are paying for the BBC’s bias and incompetence.

It's just missing the imaginary deal that Labour think they can pull out of their arse.

It was interesting to hear Ken Clarke say recently that even though the recent process has been frustrating - RE: lack of compromise to agree on a deal - that the house has found it all exciting and interesting. I think a lot of them find it all a little too interesting and a bit of a laugh to keep voting stuff down just for the piss and to keep it all rolling on, for a long time they've had nothing interesting to turn up for and now all of a sudden they're in the news 24/7 during "unprecedented times" and they're getting off on it, even if it is just making them look like a massive cunch of bunts.

I doubt any of the outcomes would have an effect on their personal circumstances so truth be known I bet a good proportion of them aren't particularly bothered how it ends and are just enjoying the shit-show.
