Your Loudspeaker history...

Some of the histories on here are truly frightening, including mine in several key stages of my audio life - eek!

Blimey, some of these lists are a bit short: from 1977 to date

Wharfedale Lintons built from a kit (my mum still uses them)
RAM 200 (stolen, along with a NAD 3030 - they left a 42/110 on the same shelf)
Kef Celeste III (Technically my wife's speakers)
Linn SARA
Linn Isobarik passive (on loan from a friend between houses for two years)
Back to the SARAs
NAIM SBL active (with 2*250)
Naim NBL active (with 3 * 250)
then NBL passive (with NAP500)
PMC DB1 5.1 setup (front room)
Back to the SARAs in the back room
ATC SCM50 ASL

Also have some EPOS ES11s in the bedroom system

Mordaunt Short MS20Ti (or similar)
Royd Minstrel
Linn Kan
Shahinian Arc
Shahinian Obelisk (two pairs)

Servolinear III -- 1973
JR-149 -- 1977
Quad ESL -- 1980
Spendor LS3/5a , 15 ohm -- 1982 (relegated to 2nd system in 1993)
Epos 14 -- 1993
Reference 3a Royal Master Control -- 1998
Tannoy System DMT15 MKII Studio Monitors -- 2003 to present
Spendor 3/5 -- 2004 to present (replaced LS3/5a in 2nd system)

Reading others' speaker evolution has been quite instructive....

Fairly straight forward to hear what's good and what's crap no?
I've had two pairs in 30 odd years, Meridian M2s and Audio Physic Virgo 111s.
Still have both, end of story.

- First 'serious' HiFi speakers where Chartwell LS3/5a in 1978 after nearly buying JBL L100. Still have them.
- B&W DM6 that where my brothers, but I had them for a couple of years. Never really liked them.
- Rauna, by the Opus 3 people. They should stick to records!
- Linn Sara.
- Linn Sara 9. Liked them a lot.
- Naim SBL. Never got them to work properly, I think.
- von Schweikert VR 3. A round earthers dream with virtually no coloration. Boring as hell.
- Naim Intro II. Very colored, but at least not boring.
- Royd RR3. Very good, probably as good as small standmounts get.
- JBL L65. Big 1970's things with proper bass and very good PRaT.
- JBL 4331B. I'm stuck in the JBL swamp now. These are very big studio monitors and reproduces all music properly with scale, authority and delicacy.

I'm feeling quite modest in my speaker-buying habits now, thanks to some of the people on here.

1985-92 Mordaunt Short Pageant 2 (big 70s boxes, nicked from my Dad and spray painted metallic purple for that student grunge look)

1992 Ruark Icon (bookshelf speakers, bought with first paycheck from that Naim dealer near London Bridge, now doing duty as rear speakers in my home cinema)

1995ish Naim SBLs passive

1997ish Naim SBLs active

2002ish ditto plus REL Strata subwoofer

2004ish Shahinian Arcs (great speakers, will buy some again one day for a third system)

2004ish ATC SCM10A-2 (super little active monitors - still use them in second system)

2004ish ATC SCM50ASL (super larger active monitors)

My first pair of speakers were bought as secondhand when I was 15.
They were made by a company called "Clearwater".
They didn't sound half bad for bookshelfers on the end of my Revolver/LvX/K9 - Nad 3020a!

Never heard of Clearwater before or since...

Moved on to Linn Helix, then Mission 753 Freedoms.
Finally got a pair of Briks a while back, phew!

Main system:
Home-made corner horns (Wireless World design)
Gale 301
Epos ES12
ATC50A

Plus, in other systems

B&W CDM1NT
Neat MFS
Monitor Audio RS5
Dali Ikon 1
Velodyne sub
Miller & Kreisel MX A/V system

Pre 1993: Celestion Dittons (possibly 15) with additional ABR (Auxillary Base Radiator)

1991-1993: Massive, friend's home made speakers that you could almost step inside, probably part horn-loaded- very sketchy memory of them- very black and a bit rough sounding.

1996-2000:
Mordaunt short MS10i- part of starter system from Richer Sounds.
B&W 602 s2- Amazingly dynamic alongside a Kenwood 3020se amp and cheap Technics CD player!
Acoustic Energy AE509, Didn't stay for long but nice smell to the wood.
KEF Q3. Sublime connected to Nicam VCR but a bit anemic with bass driven music...BUT then:

1998- 2003:
JBL 4312 mk2 (90's reissue). Amazing dynamics! Didn't get on with slight mid-range colouration (nasality) but, unwisely, did not try alternate amplification before selling them.

1998-2005:
PMC TB2
PMC GB1

2005-2006
Tannoy Ardens 15"

2006-present:
Tannoy 15 DMT mk2

2007-present:
Merlin VSM MMe

Past subs:
REL Stampede.
Revel B15a (putting vinyl or FM through it just didn't work for me)
