Your CD player history...

Nice thread Mike.

Technics thing.
Sony thing.
Pioneer platter thing x2 (one was stolen)
Arcam Alpha One
Naim CD3.5/FC2
Naim CDX (also bought a Rega 25)
Naim CDX/XPS
Naim CDS2/XPS
Philips 963SA (bought a Rega P9, you can see where my priorities are)
PS3 and various iTunes/Airport Express concoctions ("digital" is now very much a secondary/background/convenient source)

Marantz CD63 MkII
Denon DCD1015 (still in the loft!)
Arcam Alpha 9 (since flogged on ebay)
Linn Ikemi.
STOP

Micromega Stage 1
Micromega Stage 2
Meridian 506.24

If the Stage players hadn't had such an unreliable transport mech I doubt I would have upgraded.

Starting somewhere around 1985/6.
Sony CDP302ES - boring........ Bright hashy sounding thing.

Followed by about 5 years of Vinyl only then:

Mission/Cyrus PCM2
Sony CDP552ES
Naim CDS
Cyrus dad3
Cyrus dad3Q/PSXR
Naim CDI
Cyrus dad7/PSXR
Naim CD5 - bodged to bits and ALW'd
Sony CDP3000ES
Rega Planet 2000
Rega Planet mk1
Meridian 206
Cambridge 640C
Cambridge 840C

Had a SB+ briefly
Now enjoying Apple Airport Express via the 840C and a Macbook Pro.
Now also of the view that bits are bits and that chasing after perfection for years was a complete waste of time and money.

Oh nearly forgot.... there was a Karik 3 in there briefly but it was clearly ill.

nad (cant recall the model)
marantz cd46
arcam alpha 7
meridian 206
meridian 206b
meridian 200t/203
meridian 200t/orelle dac
meridian 200t/audio note dac
meridian 200t/audio synthesis ultra dsm dac

i like the 200 series me :-D

Vuk,

A Naim CDS 555 would be nice.

I bought the Linn Majik CD because it reminded me of a CDS2. It is certainly head and shoulders above a CDX, even with an XPS to my ears. Unlike with the Ikemi you can easily follow bass lines too.

I've got my sights on a GamuT CD3 as it is an incredibly musical player for the money. I'll have to admit that I seem to like a lot of Danish hi-fi.

I'm purposely avoiding the 555 and CDS3 knowing how I well I like a CDS2. Same with the 552.

Marantz CD73 1983 model (s/n 003!. Never worked returned to Comet, somehow I had got a pre-production unit!)
Marantz CD73 1983 model - Nice, smooth sound. Played all of the Rush and BJH CD's available at the time!
1985-??? No CD - back to vinyl
Marantz CD63 SE - no better than the original CD73
Naim CD3 -A little better than the CD73
Naim CDX / XPS - Further improvement but merciless on poor discs
Old SCSI Transport / Flying Cow DAC - Almost as good as the CDX
Heavily Bodged Naim CDX / XPS - Best so far, detailed, 3D but with prat.

Philips CD100 - 1984ish. Sounded fine to me, and got rid of the snap crackle and pop of classical LPs which was driving
me crazy at that time. Still works - just, and comes out to play from time to time.
Some other Philips job - 1989
Rotel 965BX - 1992. A really good machine, and still going in my son's bedroom.
Audiolab 8000CD - 1990. The Marantz 17KI was on the list at the time. The Audiolab won - it sounded more together.
Audiolab 8000CD + TAG DAC20 - better.
TAG CDT20R TL + TAG DAC20 - even better.
TAG CDT20R TL + TAG AV32R - 2004. It sounds very good to me.
Also have a Philips 963, but only use it for DVD and SACD.

Marantz CD50SE
dpa renaissance CD player
dpa renaissance transport+SX128 DAC
Simaudio Moon Eclipse CD player
iPod 80GB video also gets used as a source for background listening.

Some shit by Denon
Something or other by Musical Fidelty - CD1??
Marantz CD52MkII
Rotel RCD-971
Rotel RCD-991 (Wow!!)
Avondale AAA5
Computer

Rega Planet
Rega Jupiter,Io
Last year bought a Sony CDP 3000 ES,for my son.Did that one make me
stop and think!

Regards Rosie

Pioneer pds801 1991 ish still going strong and still use from time to time
Aura CD100 Used daily in the kitchen system
Linn Genki still one of my favourites
AAA5 just pipped the Genki
CD3 needs new transport. I must get off my bum and post to Les.
Pioneer 868, used as a dvd player but I understand its not bad with an external dac. I must try this.

Naim CDI
Naim CDS2
Streaming solution beckons... but think the CDS2 will be kept.
Also, a Rega Planet Mk1 -- second system (cherished for sound vs value and it's industrial looks)

I'm purposely avoiding the 555 and CDS3 knowing how I well I like a CDS2. Same with the 552.

Good move. After hearing the 555/552/500 combination nothing else (from Naim) will do.

Allright then,...here we go:

(starting in 1986 or so)

Philips CD150
Pioneer PD4300
Philips CD104
Nakamichi CDP2
Onkyo DX706
Rotel 930
Rotel 965 (modified with tubes)
NAD 512
Proceed PCD1
Cyrus 1
Marantz CD63KI (2 times)
Naim CD3.5
Naim CDX
Naim CD5x

That's about it.

Rotel

Arcam Alpha 5 - pretty good
Quad CD77 - very good
modified Quad CD77 (ALW superregs etc.) - excellent
modified Arcam Alpha 5+ - excellent
Cambridge Azur C740 - excellent, but not quite as good as the modded Alpha 5+, but it has introduced me to using a laptop as source with my soundblaster external USB device into the digital inputs.

I still have the last three, but the Quad is back in the UK and I'm in Singapore.
