Spendor D9 Speakers available on demonstration

Spendor have always been a one of the shop favourite brands – products like the new D9 are a stark reminder that we should make noise about them. D9 is the latest from their portfolio – which are now a permanent, in store demonstration product. This is a belated replacement to the A9 – so it is the biggest speaker in terms of cabinet size, accross A & D lines but fits in with the design concept of the more recently successful D7.

Comparisons will naturally be made against the D7 – but make no mistake this speaker performs to levels beyond the D7. They do however, use the same high-frequency driver – the LPZ (Linear Pressure Zone) tweeter. I have written before, this drive unit injected a bit excitement to the traditional & polite sound of previous Spendor model, in my opinion. This driver sits below the mid-range in a cabinet 1,125mm tall – the positioning of this drive unit helps improves the horizontal dispersion & brings it closer to ear height for a listener when sat down – a bigger sweet spot.

This is a true three-way design; a dedicated driver for High, Mid-Range & Low Frequencies. As many of you will know, separating the job of each driver means it can work more comfortably within its parameters. New Spendor 18cm drive units have been developed for the D9, all Spendor bass & mid-range drive units are made in house, within strict tolerances. Bass driver units are made of Kevlar composite – chosen for its lightweight & ridged properties. Mid-range is polymer cone which is isolated in a separate enclosure in the top of the cabinet. A phase correction plug sits in the centre of the driver improving rigidity.

In the D9 low frequencies are handled by two specially designed bass drivers in a substantial volume enclosure. For optimum low frequency response and power handling the enclosure is ported, but not like any conventional loudspeaker. The D9 incorporates Spendors innovative Fifth Generation Linear Flow Port Technology. Inspired by Formula 1 diffuser technology it offers significant advantages over any conventional port or transmission line speakers.

The Spendor D9 looks as good as it sounds. Available in four standard wood veneer finishes or four high gloss premium finishes, the D9 is sure to look at home in any living space.
