The key here is to work around the acoustic problems of the room. Both the speakers and your head should avoid walls, corners and the centre of the room. In a 10 ft room I would try to sit about 7 ft from the front wall. Try to keep the speakers at least a ft from the wall and well clear of the corners. Experimentation will pay dividends but this should avoid the worst. Lining one wall with shelving and a music collection will help.
Ancient photo of my old system in a converted shed in our garden in Melbourne while we were preparing to move back to the UK. This iteration was 2XNap250, 102, LP12, Thorens TD2010, CD3.5/FC, 3xHC (stageline, prefix,102) and a 'Qute for streaming driving a pair of Neat Motive 3se. Mad thing for such a small space, but fabulous fun, if a little in your face. The photo is from the listening chair (OK, it was the only chair) which was about 30cm from the wall of the shed.
