repairing the voice coil is possible or "my new stereo set of garbage"?

That is unfortunate.

Maybe it is the connection to the voice coil that has got damaged in the refoaming.

That's a good shout.

Have a look at the braided flying leads that extend from back of the cone to the driver terminals.
