Photographing Watches and Jewellery for Insurance

I need / want to photograph watches and jewellery as a record and proof of ownership in the event we need to make a claim.

I think there are at least 2 parts to this - the best way to actually take the pictures i.e. background with say a ruler or similar to show size but also the additional information to be included to show ownership in the event there are no receipts.

Can anyone recommend the best way to do this please.

Of course the metadata on a digital photo gives a time line.
