  2. Where we are now: The site is back up and running! The character set encoding issue has been fixed so old posts should now look ok. I am currently working on themes/skins etc and I will be deleting the temporary green skin very soon as it has many issues. I will do a very quick variation on the stock blue skin first just to get a light-grey background and san-serif font, and I will set this as default. Later this week I will hopefully add a professional third-party skin in pfm colours (life is way too short to do this crap myself, and I've found one I really like than needs next to no tweaking). We are getting there slowly...

  3. May I please request people check and update their email address if it is out if date. I ask as I’m getting countless bounce errors as the server fails to send notifications through etc. I’ll eventually figure out how to send these to a black hole somewhere, but it makes sense to address it at source as quite a few folk are obviously not getting the thread and conversations notifications they have set in their preferences.

  4. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

Homebrew interconnects - Silver Solder/anudder question

Discussion in 'd.i.y.' started by seagullsnacker, Mar 13, 2006.

  1. Some rather nice Amateur radio friends of mine have sourced some spiffy 75ohm PTFE Coax with silver conductor and braid...I was wondering where I might be able to get silver solder as I fancy knocking up some interconnects and was a wondering where I could get this last piece of the jigsaw (I have standard 60/40 Multicore)

Also I see piccies of Kimber interconnects and it appears they have 3 strands woven together?...live and ground I understand but whats the other one for?...

enquiring minds wish to know (as any fule no) etc...

One the very few occasions that i've tried to use high silver content solder I've always found it difficult to use. For this reason i now always use Multicore branded 'standard' type electronic solder.

What is the secret for using silver content solder successfully?

Sid , use a temperature controlled soldering iron set to 400 centigrade and be really quick , seems to work for me:cool:

  7. anyone any further info on this?

An interconnect (phono) as far as I can see has just two connections per side...one for the centre conductor and one for the braid...so whassup with the Kimber ones which have (or appear to have) three wires?

    for example

Also lucky enough to have a temp controlled Weller Soldering Station...so Silver Solder should be OK...just be quick as Jon says...;)

I've just got a bog standard 25w soldering iron at home but have access to a decent Weller temp controlled one at work.
I got a silver/copper I/C that needs repairing and some silvery type solder so will try this tonight. Cheers.

Sid , makes sure everything is degreased , use a bit of alcohol to clean, if you have access to it:D
