Best starter dslr

All depends. Get into a shop and try some of the options, there's no such thing as "best", it all depends on ergonomics and cost/benefit (not point paying for features you don't need), and those are personal preference things. Performance-wise there's bugger all to choose between most of the mainstream dslrs nowadays.
 
Any advice on whether a d40 is OK, or whether a d60 is a better option ffor the little more it costs? I'd read that the d40x has slower flash response than the d40, so have ruled this out for now.

I use a D40 quite a lot and TBH it does everything I want 100%. Only problems are usually down to lens quality (or lack off) and my inability to frame a subject!
 
I appreciate all that PM'ed - thanks to one kind member I now have a Nikon D70 with an 18-70 lens on it's way to me, can't wait!
