50 Greatest Bargains in High-End Audio

KZ IEM headphones I paid 17 quid from Amazon based on reviews and I'm am truly stumped. Why would you pay hundreds when you can have these. The model I bought are the KZ ate version.

Thanks for the heads up on these. I received my KZ ATE IEMs a couple of days ago. I paid less than a tenner and, quite frankly, they blow my old Sennheiser CX300 mkii into the weeds. Ok, the bass is obviously enhanced, but they're really detailed, and apart from the bass, quite neutral, no boom tizz, just a bit of boom, which is actually well controlled. They seem to be well made and the cables are nowhere near as microphonic as the Sennheisers. Very happy with them.

I had one. I thought my Rega RP8 sounded better and sold the AMG, so the AMG isn't making my "greatest of" anything list. The Rega RP8 and Kuzma Stabi S are for my money the two greatest bargains that I know of in the turntable world.
which do you prefer Ross?

which do you prefer Ross?

Well, I've upgraded again to the Kuzma Stabi Reference, but still have both the RP8 and the Stabi S. The fact that I can't really decide which of the two to sell should tell you something. The Stabi S is better than the RP8, but needs a better arm than the usual Stogi S to prove it. But with a good arm (I use a Stogi Ref) it is about double the price of the RP8. On the other hand, the RP8 is still a cracking turntable, which seems to inject fun into whatever music is playing, while still sounding fairly neutral. I could easily live with any of them.

Headphones are an incredibly personal choice. I happen to love my Audio Technica ATH TAD 500 as they have a beautiful mid range rather than boom and tizz and they fit my ears. I am perfectly happy for others to like more "solid bass and clarity"
I don't believe that there is a universally agreed "flat" frequency response

Buy second hand high quality British gear from a hifi geek?

Still an area of engineering that we excel in, and hifi geeks look after their gear very well, mostly. The only thing I have ever bought new was a pair of Harbeth SHL5s. You can put together amazing systems with used gear at a fraction of the cost of new.

Not just used, do your homework/wait for sale, haggle and buy NOS stuff. I mainly like to buy new and have only ever paid full price on maybe 5-10 items.

Martin Logan not spending enough on advertising ?

Advertising, driving magazine recommendations surely not. Where's Bose on this list anyway, surely they should be top of every category.... or maybe they don't advertise in the right places.

Ultra High-End

Berkeley Alpha Reference DAC Series 2, $19,995
Definitely right. If you spent $20k on any other dac you'd be wasting your money.

errr no Rega Planar 3, Creek 4040 or any of Akroyd or Royd speakers such as Coniston, Coniston R or Eden?

Sacrilige

Agree with the DragonFly Black, but I would also mention the Cambridge DacMagic XS.

Also the Cambridge’s CXN is a bargain IMHO.

For headphones, the AKG K92 for less than 50€ are a steal.

Considering its astonishing musicality, the Lejonklou Slipsik 6 MM phono is a bargain too.
