FM antenna, quirky?

Nick,

I popped open the EG750 and it is very similar but not quite the same.

Uher's tuner production in the late 70s - early '80s seems a bit confusing. My EG-730, allegedly introduced in 1979, has only a digital display and a completely different "look" from the 740 and 750. The latter having an analogue display, so one would think they are older, in spite of the higher model number. Maybe by comparing serial numbers and exactly what is written on the back of the machine?

My EG-730 says "Uher Werke Munchen" and "Typ EG 730 stereo" and the SN seems to be 173028XX.

Simon, does the EG 751 have wide & narrow bandwidth settings? Also, what does the 'AUFN.PEGEL' switch on the bottom left do?

Thanks,
Nick

Could it be 'Aufnahme Pegel', which Google Translate says is 'Recording Level'? Like a calibration tone for setting the highest levels.

Yes that seems right. My German dictionary gives "Aufnahme" as reception and "Pegel" as "level recorder". If I put it on "Aus" the stereo indicator light is on, if on "Ein" the stereo indicator light goes off.
Is there a German-speaker (with some radio/HiFi knowledge) in the house?

Nick,
No, neither the 750 nor the 751 have narrow/wide selection. The 750 has AFC (automatic frequency control), the 751 does not.

I sat down and did a serious listen to both the Accuphase t109 and the EG751, both tuned to the same station, antenna split between the two. Switching back and forth merely by switching the amp input selector. I can't differentiate between the two. Even blinded, with my wife changing between the two I can't differentiate the two tuners.

Just had a look at photographs of the EG751, and it looks like the exact same production run/period as my EG730. The same displays, the same knobs and buttons, the same graphics. This would put them both around 1979-1981.

The difference is that the 751 is much bigger, and looks like it has two SW bands. The 730 is half the thickness, only LW/MW/UHF and has four "dished" concavities on the top, presumably for stacking a matched amp on top.
Incidentally, there are 2 EG730s on German ebay at the moment.

I just switched everything on and pushed the "Auf-pegel" lever down, to "Ein" and the tuner emits a constant beep sound, maybe around 4000 Hertz, more or less the same volume as the music, but there is no music. Sounds a bit like what a car does when you take out the ignition key with the lights on. Anyone any idea what this means?

Yes, Auf Pegel means Level On in German. The tone is for setting the level on a tape recorder. 4kHz sounds rather high, it could be 2kHz as Dolby level was set at 2 kHz.

The EG 751 has FM (UKW, the German abbreviation for VHF) and MW. The EG 750 looks nicer though :)

The other bidder has a higher outstanding overall bid (for example it might be 100 Euro in this auction). Hence, his current bid shifts by the bidding increment (0.50 Euro in this case) above your bid of 30 Euro.

Simon, as you have both the 750 and 751, which one in your opinion sounds better or is there nothing to choose between them? If they are both neck and neck I may go for a 750 as it does look nicer!

Nick,

They are both great tuners. Given how cheaply the 750's go for on ebay.de, that would be my suggestion.

Thanks Simon.

I found some more info on the 750 on a German forum. It seems that it was built in Japan by Hitachi but was designed and specified in Germany, so not just an OEM in a new case. Here's a Google translation of part of a post on this thread:

http://www.hifi-forum.de/viewthread-84-12863.html

So the Uher, so also said Uher, was based on German reception specifications, elaborately designed in cooperation, and then built in Japan ... not just an arbitrary x-Japan re-labeled cheaper OEM tuner. As you can see the other brands sometimes. It shows you if orig. Hitachi tuner Opener times, the Uher's quite expensive and so far I am not a specialist with 4 Hitachi Drehko fallen into the hands that would interest me once that Hitachi Japan or U.S. unit closest to constructively participate in the EC 750 UHER rankommt.

So perhaps like the Wega Lab Zero which was a co-operation between Wega and Sony.

There are some similarities in appearance with the Hitachi FT-920:

Edit: here's a comparison with Simon's shot of the EG 750's innards, and a smaller one of the Hitachi FT-920:

Internals of FT 920

Looks VERY similar to me. I hope the EG 750 is a better performer!

Nick,

There is another 751 on ebay.de with less than one day to go and currently under 25 Euro.
