Vuelta

I' have seen him coughing his lungs up after a hard stage too.
Please let this be legit.

We don't need bad news

I am so frustrated by this. I really don't want him to be doing dodgy stuff and still have faith in Froome that it is a cock up rather than conspiracy. However, there is a well defined process to allow the use of Salbutamol within limits and he is way over those so I am afraid he will have to suffer the penalty. I am curious as to what the dosage required to give those results and how it compares to "normal" inhaler use.

Regardless, this does nothing to help the reputation of cycling

A good write up from the always excellent Inner Ring here:

Like you, I want to believe in Froome/Sky, but it’s never been easy... Contract up and on the way out of Sky, Froome’s only called up for the 2011 Vuelta as a late replacement. Comes second to Tony Martin in the tt and leads the race. Loses on bonus seconds after waiting for Wiggins on the Angliru, as even his own team fail to realise he’s suddenly the strongest climber in the world, after recovering from a never previously-mentioned tropical illness. (Also no mention of asthma in his book.) Some marginal gains later, wins the Vuelta... and four Tours. Legit? I’ve no idea, but it doesn’t look great, and this is pro cycling...

(Same with Wiggins, ofc... 2008, track specialist, grupetto regular, and occasional lead-out for Cavendish. That winter, with British Cycling’s help, he loses 12kg (!) with no apparent loss of power. 2009, Brailsford, head of BC, sees how strong and light Wiggins is and announces he’s starting Sky. Wiggins climbs with Contador, Schleck, and Armstrong at the Tour. Some marginal gains later, he wins the Tour with Sky. Legit? I’ve no idea, but it doesn’t look great, and this is pro cycling... )

Back to today, I get the impression that Froome/Sky thought this wouldn’t come out, especially as he’s since signed up for the Giro. He even seemed pretty calm about it yesterday, confident that once he’s undertaken the required tests, he’ll be cleared...

Be good to hear from Froome and Sky. Waiting.......

Legit? I’ve no idea, but...

At least they've redesigned the logo...

I do hope these achievements stand the test of time.

I like the guy but I have a number of cycling buddies who are very very cynical when it comes to the whole Brailsford/Sky package post Wiggins.

It makes me a little less enthusiastic than I might be. I can't see the guy winning SPOTY on the Beeb.

Wout Poels has looked very strong indeed - we've seen nothing like that from him before AFAIK.

So I'm wondering if an apology has been forthcoming from Steve, Paul or this "Spike" joker. It's been three months after all since their irrational patriotic outbursts :D Ooh must hurt...

Bottom line. The UCI state a max daily intake of salbutamol and also a max blood concentration. There is very good peer reviewed testing to show that's 65% of Joe blogs who were tested exceeded the blood concentration when only taking the UCI dose. Basically the UCI max blood level can be exceeded with less than the UCI intake levels. Ergo, he'll get off. And theyll have to down adjust the intake level or up the allowed blood levels.

How thst will affect those who got punished before is an issue for the UCI. But it's proven already, reviewed and published. The UCI cannot ignore this proof.

So while he's exceeded the blood levels, it doesn't mean he exceeded the daily limit.

so many pro athletes are asthmatic it seems so no surprise that Ventolin is so commonplace. I heard a guy on R4 the other morning (testing lab tech I think) suggest that to get the result Froome has - it'd mean an extra 4-6 puffs of the the material over a 24 hour period...assuming he metabolises it as most do. Doesn't sound much to me and he added that studies suggest that Salbutamol doesn't enhance performance either. Just hope it's not a masking agent?

Your second sentence doesn’t necessarily follow on from your first though. The fact that it’s only a one-day spike (as I wrote already, after his bad day on Los Machucos) is unusual, and Froome now has to prove, by undergoing tests, that he’s only taken the allowed dose.

An interesting interview with an anti-doping expert here:

So what are your takeaway observations about this case?

It’s so difficult to say actually. It doesn’t quite add up that a few extra doses have caused it to go that high in the urine. The number of times he’s been tested, and a number of days he might have used is quite high, so for one to go above that threshold is odd. It’s quite a change from the normal pattern. It’s not impossible, but quite a difficult one to see how he can fully explain that away.
