Something to be aware of. Many DVD/Blue Ray players output 48kHz as opposed to 44.1kHz. Not a problem for most DACs, but it does show that the signal has been processed by the player. Thus comparing a CD player digital out to BluRay digital out may not be quite comparing apples with apples.

The best' sound I've ever experienced from a home system was created by the B&O Beolab 90 system. Absolutely stunning. OK, it's very expensive and well beyond what I can afford, but it certainly dispels the notion that B&O is all about style over substance.

This sounds just like simmerstat control. I doubt the OP's unit is faulty. Trying to prove not fit for purpose would be futile, imo. Perhaps take the restocking fee on the chin and swap for a better quality unit?

Seems like a reasonable price. Around £1600 or so new. 50-60% for a good used example is reasonable . Don't forget that, like a car, as soon as the item is bought it becomes secondhand, however much it may or may not have been used.
