(Apologies for reviving this old thread, took me a while to find it.)
I finally refurbed the speakers and posted some photos, I am really happy with how these turned out.
Thanks again to everyone for advice and inspiration. Big love for pfm...
Guilty, yes I really wanted to have the final pay-off. They will eventually be set up on some nice stands and I promise to post a photo when I get there!
Thanks for the positive energy!
Then time to veneer. I had never done this before but watched countless YouTube videos and read up the pro's and con's of various techniques. I went for TiteBond applied to both layers with a roller. Let both layers dry, then you can move the veneer into position and apply heat with an iron...
Not saying I'm a superficial person, but I've always liked the look of blue-fronted JBL speakers especially partnered with vintage Luxman amp in matching teak case. It was 2012 and I had already managed to repair a Luxman SQ38 FD MkII imported from Australia. Then took a punt and bought some JBL...
@booja30 Wow those look wonderful, great work, very inspiring. If I can get mine looking anything close to yours I will be so happy. I am starting the veneer this weekend and will post a few progress photos at some point soon.
I really like the idea of making the crossovers removable without...
I am part-way through stripping and restoring my JBL 4312A speakers which sound great but had unsightly tatty studio cabinets.
As part of this I have carefully freed the crossovers as shown in the photos. The knobs sounded a little 'scratchy' so I have anointed them with DeoxIT. As for the...
Do it! I have the same model driven by a vintage Luxman SQ38FD mkII and they sound superb all day long. They are in a similar condition and I am also planning to veneer them later this year, may also spray the fronts (RAL 5007 I believe). I am definitely going to veneer over the original...
Whoa amazing coincidence - fellow member and Tannoy owner here - my (now) wife and I stayed at your property in Mandrem many many years ago. Big smiles thinking about it - magical place and wonderful memories, hoping to visit again one day. Best wishes x
In case this doesn't work, would anyone recommend an insensitive closed headphone for similar budget to the DT-770 (say up to £150ish)? Must be closed to block outside noise and prevent sound leakage which current headphones do really well.
Guess I should have asked here first...!
Thank you everyone, I can just about manage basic soldering and have bought the parts to make the attenuator which I eventually found shown on this page:

...with the 33Ω and 3.3Ω resistors. I don't know enough...
I've just started using my beloved Luxman SQ38FD MK-II with a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 250 ohm headphones for evening listening. Really happy so far apart from noticeable background hiss.
I have the volume pot somewhere between 7 and 9 o'clock and music is easily loud enough. Hiss is...
Confession: two years ago I almost ruined my newly acquired 509 MK1s by attempting to bias them myself. I corrected one, but the second contained a fragile aged pot which disintegrated under excitement and enthusiasm.
They were dispatched for service by TdP himself for a modest fee, and have...
