The pink fish media Acceptable Usage Policy

Use of the pink fish media forum (hereafter pfm) relies on your accepting the following terms and conditions. By participating in this forum, you acknowledge your full acceptance of these terms.

Rules of Conduct

Forum members shall not post or transmit through pfm any defamatory, threatening, insulting, harmful, pornographic or other material that would violate or infringe in any way upon the rights of others, or that would give rise to criminal or civil liability and / or violate federal or local law or regulation. Forum members may not transmit materials that encourage conduct that constitutes a criminal offence.

Forum members shall not upload, post or otherwise make available on pfm any material protected by copyright, trademark or other proprietary right without the express permission of the owner of such copyright, trademark or other proprietary right. Unfortunately this has to include 'needle drops' e.g. short snippets used for the evaluation of turntables, cartridges etc as, whilst useless from a software piracy perspective, they do break the letter of the law and therefore place the site at risk.

pfm believes strongly in freedom of speech and will edit or delete posts only as a last resort, e.g. to remove libellous, racist, bigoted, misogynistic, fascist/far-right-adjacent, or otherwise insulting or offensive statements. This is a global multicultural multiethnic LGBTQ+ friendly site and members are requested to respect the views and beliefs of others.

pfm is a community and therefore relies on input from its members. If a member notices a post that breaches this AUP or that they are otherwise unhappy with they are encouraged to report it to the moderation team. There is a ‘report post’ button to the right of the post number of each post for this purpose.

Aliases

Whenever you post a message on this forum your alias will appear automatically with your message. You may choose any name; however, you may not use a user name (or e-mail address) that attempts to impersonate another person or that pfm deems to be offensive.

Trade Accounts & Advertising

The pink fish forum finances itself by charging our trade members a small annual fee of 50 UK pounds for the ability to advertise their wares in the trade rooms located within the commerce section of the site.

The criteria for requiring a trade account is pretty simple yet a little tricky to define. It is actually far easier to firmly define the standard ‘free’ classifieds: these are intended for pfm members to sell their own kit when upgrading / down-grading / side-grading or whatever. A blind eye is turned to occasional non-typical items, cars, bikes, computers etc, but the key thing is it is all private, non-profit / business use.

The trade account takes over where this leaves off, i.e. if someone starts making money out of pfm it is only fair they contribute a little to it’s upkeep. To add incentive there are two dedicated trade rooms plus trade account holders have a Private Message mailbox capable of holding 50 messages instead of the normal 10 – this makes life a lot easier for those selling regularly.

The content and approach to this advertising is largely up to the dealers and manufactures who utilise this facility. Many have had great success with advertising second hand and ex-dem stock and alerting the members to trade and industry events etc. A list of current pfm Trade Accounts can be found by following the 'View Forum Leaders' link on the forum front page.

There is no limit to the amount of posting allowed. The only stipulations are that trade members do not attempt to use the forum as a customer service desk. Disputes with customers will not be hosted on this forum - they are obviously a private matter and beyond the scope of the site and may even be viewed as a reason to cancel a trade account. pfm will also not tolerate spam. It is unacceptable for manufacturers or dealers to actively position or market their products in general audio discussion threads. All advertising must be contained within the provided trade or classified rooms.

If a dealer or manufacturer wishes to offer a product or service for demonstration an announcement must be made in the ‘trade discussion’ area and those wishing to take up the offer may contact the trade member via PM or email. Any feedback should be in a thread started by a regular member – this is to avoid allegations of openly advertising in the main room as detailed above. pfm would like to actively encourage trade members to make use of this approach as when correctly implemented it is of great benefit to the community as a whole.

Banning members

pfm reserves the right to remove any user account or to hinder a member from posting further whilst leaving the member's existing posts intact — these actions collectively known as banning a member — at any time and without explanation if the member's presence is seen to hinder the smooth running of the forum.

If a member has been banned, for whatever reason, that member should no longer be a subject of discussion, as banned members can't reply. However, this clause is a courtesy only; it is not a right. pfm will generally honour this clause unless a banned member attempts to post again or otherwise attacks the site. If the banned member chooses to act in this manner, the moderation team — at its sole discretion — may decide to allow discussion of the banned member within the limits of the Rules of Conduct.

Trolls

pfm will not tolerate trolls, i.e. the baiting or deliberately winding-up of another member with the aim of pushing them to a ban, derailing a thread or otherwise simply causing trouble for effect. We also cover ‘sock puppetry’ in this category, e.g. the creation of one or more accounts under an alias different from the original username a member has chosen (this includes the return of a banned member under a covert identity). However, a member may always ask the administrator to change/rename his or her alias. A member may also ask the administrator to allow more than one account if there are legitimate reasons, e.g. if distinct trade and personal accounts are needed.

Thread crapping

The term ‘thread crapping’ describes a situation where a member makes a post that is clearly contrary to the spirit or intent of the thread with the apparent aim of derailing the discussion or turning it into an argument. Criticism of pricing etc in the classifieds, disrespectful posts on RIP threads etc is considered bad form and is also seen as 'thread crapping'. Persistent examples of such behaviour may result in a poster being banned for a period of time.

Cyclic Arguments

pfm will not host lengthy multi-page cyclical debates that become more entrenched and aggressive with each repetition of a point. Certain audio topics seem particularly prone to this e.g. DBT / ABX testing and the whole subjective vs. objective debate. A poster may be banned from the forum should they not heed moderation requesting that a subject or repetitious viewpoint be dropped.

”Joke” threads

pfm does not host “joke” threads as it is always only a matter of time before they descend into offensive territory.

Images and links to external sites

Many pfm members access the forum from work. As such, no image that could be considered offensive should be placed inline using the vBcode IMG tags, as doing so could lead to disciplinary procedures being taken against inadvertent viewers. Pornographic images or links to sites containing such images or content have no place on pfm and will be considered a breach of this AUP.

The audio community

pfm sits harmoniously in the audio community along with many other audio and music forums. It is not acceptable to bring personal argument, conflict or vendetta from another place onto this forum, nor is it acceptable to post links to external websites hosting such content.

How pfm is financed

pink fish media largely supports itself through advertising, both via our Trade Account system and via Google AdSense, and Amazon and eBay partner networks. As such pfm reserves the right to add to, overwrite or replace any such affiliate, commercial, or monetizable links, posted by users of pfm, with our own internal tracking and monetisation codes. We have a dedicated forum for interesting eBay auctions and members are actively encouraged to post links there and elsewhere on the site, e.g. please link to your recent music purchases on Amazon or eBay as it does help us. Links must be unambiguous and clear that they are links to either eBay or Amazon. All members have been asked to accept/acknowledge that this site uses cookies, some of which pertain to this functionality.

In an attempt to get the right trade customers on board at pfm, it is suggested that if you like pfm and also like your local dealer or manufacturer, you attempt to bring both parties together. If you have had great service and support from them, it implies other people will too. pfm generates a lot of sales for the dealers and manufacturers we have on board already and will no doubt do the same for yours so all parties benefit.

Dealers and manufacturers are also obviously welcome (in fact actively encouraged) to join in discussion on any topic on an equal footing to everyone else in the pfm community.

If you wish to make a personal donation to help support pink fish media there is a PayPal Donate button on the main navigation bar of the forum . For other payment methods, including donating unwanted LPs and CDs to the record shop, please contact the site administrator (Tony L) via the Private Message system.
