ESL porn by popular request!

WRT positioning, avoid all the popular rules and play it entirely by ear.
You'll find that they behave quite unlike a conventional box speaker so just experiment.

They look excellent.

Play some Beatles mono remasters on them asap :)

"Dear God! - No, before you ask..."

That was my girlfriend's reaction! :)

No, really? I must say I'm surprised, I would have thought most girlfriends would have gone for it immediately.;);)

Thanks for the advice Robert, I'm listening now and they are sensational pulled into the room 1/3 way. I'm about 2m from each, the small matter of a wall prevents me getting further back. I can't have them lengthways, the room's too small.

As for girlfriends, well, maybe there's a reason why I'm single.;) It's not all bad when I can listen to stuff like this. I've never heard speakers this open since I heard a pair of huge TLs in Grenoble, France, 10 yrs ago. They were 300,000 FF (£30k)!

No problem at all. Hide them behind the curtains when you have girls come to stay, they still let the light come thru ;)

Good idea Trancera. I'm sure they will never know.;)

TBH given the number of women I get calling I could afford to put the 57s in the back garden when they call.:(

Great result Steve. They look very nice in the photos.

Bet you didn't pay a huge amount for them either. You've just won the pfm best value high-end speakers award.

What speakers were you using before, and is there any aspect of the performance of the old speakers that you prefer?

Dunno about "not a huge amount", they certainly cost enough:eek:. That said if you reckon on a decent set of ESL57s costing £400 up, then if I got 2 sets plus a frame, I think I paid the right sort of sum. Equally, in the context of "high end", I got them for nowt.:)

My old speakers are QLN Prestige floorstanders, with an external XO. Ironically I bought them from the same shop, as ex dem, with a damaged corner. The shop had just fallen out with the UK distributor, who had gone bust, so I got them for a song (as in £400 for a set of £2k speakers!)

What do the old ones do better? Easy. Rock and roll, dance music, anything with a "bump-thump" to it. That said the ESLs are so sensational on any acoustic music that I can forgive the lack of bass drive. They don't lack bass *response*, they do go deep, they just don't punch you like cabinet speakers can.

I don't often listen to classical music, but I've got a disc of Moeran's string quartets playing just now and it really is amazing. Shut your eyes and the musicians are sitting just behind the back wall. Yes, behind. ESLs do that, don't ask me why or how. My 63s were the same.

(any chance of a look at the back?)

Cheers,
Jonathan
Weirdo.;)
:p:p

I'll post up some pics in the morning.:)

Robert, believe it or not a Yaqin MC10, a Chinese EL34. It's a lovely amp and sounds sensational on both these and my conventional speakers (still in the room, just lost somewhere!)

Bedtime now gents.
Goodnight all, I'll have Jonathan's hardcore rear-view photes available then so he can have a good look:eek::D.

The dirty old man.;):p

They still sound fab.

(nudge nudge, wink wink) Hardcore rear view shots added for Jonathan. ;-)

You should get it on the original linky, I just added to the album.

Theres a Quad service label on the lower set. 20 years old but better than nothing.

BTW, joking aside and when I've finished pulling JRs leg, when you look at them arranged like this it would be a VERY simple affair to double up, as I'm sure he is thinking. Full dimensioned sketches on request, the frames could be knocked up in an hour by a cackhanded welder (I suspect mine were, to say these are factory items the welding is absolutely crap. I'm no timeserved coded TIG boy but I can weld better than this and even if I can't I have the good sense to disguise my shame with the application of a grinder.) The wood is simply a hardwood plank, you could of course use ply if you preferred.

Busted!:D
Those are my QLNs, I don't have anywhere else for them just now so they can stay, albeit no longer hooked up. I may/will keep them for blasting duties when the need for AC/DC takes me. If I'm going to annoy the neighbours then I want to do it without worrying about blowing a panel.
