Dunno about "not a huge amount", they certainly cost enough
. That said if you reckon on a decent set of ESL57s costing £400 up, then if I got 2 sets plus a frame, I think I paid the right sort of sum. Equally, in the context of "high end", I got them for nowt.
My old speakers are QLN Prestige floorstanders, with an external XO. Ironically I bought them from the same shop, as ex dem, with a damaged corner. The shop had just fallen out with the UK distributor, who had gone bust, so I got them for a song (as in £400 for a set of £2k speakers!)
What do the old ones do better? Easy. Rock and roll, dance music, anything with a "bump-thump" to it. That said the ESLs are so sensational on any acoustic music that I can forgive the lack of bass drive. They don't lack bass *response*, they do go deep, they just don't punch you like cabinet speakers can.
I don't often listen to classical music, but I've got a disc of Moeran's string quartets playing just now and it really is amazing. Shut your eyes and the musicians are sitting just behind the back wall. Yes, behind. ESLs do that, don't ask me why or how. My 63s were the same.
