Pet peeves in films/tv

Just a bit of fun. What things irritate you when you see them in films or tv shows?

One of mine, is when characters (and therefore obviously the actors themselves) are young (specifically under 16 or there abouts) and they have deep meaningful insightful meaning of life conversations, or make similar such statements. I just view these scenes thinking to myself. No 13 year old (or insert appropriately young age), has that much emotional intelligence and certainly hasn't had nearly enough life experience to be saying such things. It just so obviously screams "this script was written by an adult and they're just obvlivious to the fact that the character is a child" to me.

What are yours?

I think you do young people a disservice. My daughter, for example, had experienced everything and learnt all there is to learn by the age of fifteen. I've been put right countless times in the intervening years.

Well Jackson Browne wrote ‘These Days’ when he 16/17 & squired Nico shortly after so there are some outliers;)

Aircraft landing on a runway accompanied by ‘Eek Eek’ screeches as the tyres touch tarmac.

Doesn’t happen. May have done years ago as the old Maxaret anti-skid reacted to the wheels speeding up, but I’ve been close to all sorts of aircraft landing on runways, and I’ve never heard it.

Hand brakes pulled on without pressing the button. At least that one should be disappearing now, unless of course, the film makers seem it necessary to dub that awful sound on.

Kids may well seem to grow up faster than we remember but judging by my experience of undergraduates when doing a recent Masters they regress massively at about age 18.

Also people in films and on TV never lock a car or put the convertible top up when parking in bad areas of town.

Which reminds me of another. Actor gets on inline 4 motorbike and then drives off in to the distance accompanied by harley davison like V twin engine sounds, or other such obviously incorrect motorbike engine sounds for the model being used. I have no idea why this happens so frequently in TV and Film, as as far as I can tell most of the time Cars aren't so blatently incorrectly overdubbed. (though I suppose it's impossible to tell as most cars used are non descript things and you can't see what the engine is, so any engine sound will likely seem ok).

Soundtrack levels designed for cinema performance, dialogue when watched on tv is
frequently inaudible over background noise, especially music. I often have to put the subtitles on.

Or, I might just be going mutton.

I watched a tenth generation copy on VHS of a porn film back in about 1985 where the highlight was a Rolls Royce pulling away from the high school to the sound of a Mini, transmission whine too. Still makes me chuckle.

The sound of a V8 engine constantly changing up through a never-ending supply of gears, and for no reason, when the car in question is a Ford Mondeo(a-like) 4-pot oil burner(a-like), clearly seen pootling along at a steady 40 miles hour. Bond movies are particuarly egregious in this respect.

One tv programme about five years ago, set in the mid-50s had one character refer to a car as an “M K One” instead of a “Mark One” (Jaguar).

Wrong on two counts, as that car was only called the Mk1 retrospectively, once the Mk2 was launched.

I changed channel.
