The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

Pretty much my thinking, I was wondering what else is out there in a similar vein, simple classic styling and a bit interesting on a not too silly budget. If anyone has any alternative suggestions?

BMR drive repair or replacement advice please.

One of the Markaudio wide range drivers would be a better match, but you will lose the even off axis response. Cotswold for another BMR would be the better option if it’s possible.

The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

Mine: Relatively understated and I like it (I should give it a decent clean looking at this pic). Worn daily but I’m not sure if I should be paranoid wearing it through London and on the tube etc. Pondering a lower value daily, as I miss a watch when not wearing it. An Apple Watch would cost...

BMR drive repair or replacement advice please.

Construction of a BMR is basically the same as a conventional wide range driver. Only difference if the ‘cone’ is intended to have resonant modes, not be pistonic.

BMR drive repair or replacement advice please.

Should the ‘cone’ look that pushed out? Has a large signal popped the voice coil out of the gap and it’s sat on the motor top plate, not correctly aligned to drop back in the gap? If there is no voice coil former damage it could maybe be carefully lifted from the back of the cone and guided back in.

Cotswold sound might have something suitable: https://www.cotswoldsound.com/index.php Or look at Tectonic BMRs which may be available for RS in small numbers, the Cotswold drivers are better from what I've seen but not an easy company to get hold of and I'm not sure they sell small numbers of...

    Sports car chat

I do like the look of the Z4, a chap at work has just bought one (cat something, needs a front bumper and headlamp) to poke the M5 v10 under the bonnet. Should be quite the weapon once finished.

    Yamaha 12" Woofer magnet realignment?

I’ve had a top plate and magnet part and slip on a pair of JBL 18” woofers. I made a jig on the lathe, to go round the OD of the magnet and top plate. Then cut it in half so it would clamp round the 2 parts pulling them into alignment (assuming they were concentric to start with). I then...

    BBMF Spitfire crash

Maybe they have no interest now, but the had the opportunity when it mattered at a young age which is great and that is what mattered (having the opportunity to see something and develop an interest, you don't have to follow everything through, but its important to be able to have a start). I'd...

    BBMF Spitfire crash

Sad turn of events, but I met an old racing driver who has a lovely vintage 50s/60s Ferrari race car, on asking about him about the risks of racing it, he was very vocal. 'Its a racing car built for racing, I would rather see it in a crumpled ball of flame with me in the middle than sat in a...

If the Quad philosophy is that an amplifier should be a straight wire with gain....

I’d agree with this based on my empirical playing with the Nelson Pass NuTube pre amp. Adding quite significant (up to 2%) amounts of low harmonic distortion to audio, would give some music a much more expansive sound stage and subjectively improve things. More complex recordings didn’t have...

Portable music player for a 9th birthday?

I bought my daughter a Fiio x3 at that age and it has been very good. I chose what music and audio books went on to it. Mostly hooked into a little JBL powered speaker at home, also surprisingly competent for what it cost.

Autoformers will give you gain at the expense of current, passively.

    Subs n Lows

Serious stuff. I heard the Trinnov in a studio control room, B&W801s and some subs (do not recall what), and a properly acoustically treated space. What the Trinnov did was quite remarkable in tightening up the sound and getting things ‘right’, and there was no low hanging fruit acoustically to...

    Subs n Lows

I'm intrigued/confused why you need a miniDSP of you have a Trinnov at your disposal?? The Trinnov is a very impressive piece of kit IMHO.
